Thought this since I started anime, other genres and entertainment mediums don't really have a concept of 'non-canon filler' in the notorious way anime does. It's interesting. I've seen people flat-out refuse to watch Naruto SD, the movies, beautifully animated anime episodes and even the books- just because it wasn't wholly written by Masashi Kishimoto.

Well here's the thing. None of it is wholly written by Kishimoto. His editors have played a HUGE part in the run of the series since the very start (did you know an editor suggested Sasuke? Like...Sasuke's existence of the manga. Pretty big deal) No arc has ever been 100% from Kishimoto's lore and as a writer/filmstudent myself I can confirm that writers do not consider their own word as bible law and are often open to outside influences. Naruto, like any series is a creative common- a franchise to be put out there, and a franchise that has been written and influenced by a bunch of creative sources already.

You don't want to acknowledge or watch 'filler'? The Inheritors of the Will of Fire is better in quality and does more with character development than most actual arcs. You're missing out is all. The Kakashi/Naruto bond, an insight into the Sannin, bonding the K11 and most importantly Shikamaru letting go of Asuma. There's a lot of real, progressive moments in there. And deserves more than to be simply off-handedly regarded as 'filler trash' and never seen again.

People like to slap the word filler on stuff indulgently as if it instantly demerits it as a piece of entertainment. What's more important? You sticking to the rules of this fictional world and only taking absolute authorship for the Bible...or entertainment? Because i'm pretty sure the latter is why we're all reading in the first place. A lot of filler is equal if not better animated & written than actual canon episodes and that's a fact.

How about these episodes? Were they not entertaining? Entertaining enough to be relevant?

All are animated amazingly, all add context and world-building and all are: E N T E R T A I N I N G

It's all part of the world and it's all 'Naruto'. Like 'canon', there is good and there is bad. The only time a filler can be considered exemplary should be when it conflicts with existing information. But even then, Kishimoto has conflicted with his own existing mythology before (Obito's graduation age and the Prime Hiruzen hijinx for example) so who is actually to judge what should be considered real and fake?

This thread isn't just for people who disregard filler but for people desperate for more chapters and content. You have it right in front of you. It's all Naruto. Enjoy.

Essentially- what do you guys value more? Lore or entertainment? Because I doubt anybody started reading all those years back for the former.

Ninja Ostrich isn't cannon.
The worst is filler arcs. They don't fit into timeline that was established by the author.
Chikara would have naruto in kcm before he met bee.
Things are disregarded not based on popularity but for continuity purpose.
The story kishi is building can't always fit with filler cause sometimes they literally dont make sense.
But filler can be interesting though

Who's to say. Unless it conflicts with existing information, what's wrong with a little world-building? (pstt I think the Ostrich is dumb too but it helps if you learn to laugh)

Did you know Kishi wanted Hiruzen to be a dog? That Naruto got through to the Chunnin Exam finals by farting? A sword that makes somebody invincible that is never brought up again? Yeah. Kishimoto has some sillier stuff.

There are some good fillers, but most of them are annoying as hell when they completely destroy the tension and excitement during an awesome fight like the STILL upcoming Gai vs Madara.

Remember that filler episode where the K11 found a genie? Totally canon material. :bdpf:

Studio's need for filler can result in bad pacing, sure. Not arguing that- but it's all there to go back and watch. The majority of the good filler is in moments that boost the original content and add to the world, not bring it screeching to a halt.

A filler instance that made no sense :Someone blocking nejis gentle fist with his arm (no protection no chakra cloak )
As far as the manga depicts not even top tiers can do that without protection.

Filler should be strictly for increasing fight time and leisure time WHEN THEY ARE IN LEISURE.
Sora was slightly entertaining but was pointless and wasted time. That filler also lengthened hidan and kakazu's travel time which was shown to be shorter in the manga and also made naruto take a long break from his wind nature training

Then that takes you out of the world and is breaking the rules of the world.

Kishi does this too though with his and his team's existing 'rules'. Semi-frequently.

Lore, when debating and entertainment when watching
