Jashin!
Someone put up a good theory here and it really got me thinking:
How would the elder son be alive? Well we have several characters that have prolonged their life beyond natural outside of edo tensai/etc. look at orochimaru, Kakuza, and obviously madara.
With that said the most interesting case is overshadowed by his otherwise weak character, Hidan. How did Hidan become immortal and who is this god he worships? Obviously this god have him real tangible power and made him completely immortal, how could something that powerful have such a small part in the plot?
My theory is that Hidan's god, Jashin, is actually the elder son and ancestor of the uchiha, the one who saved madara, and the true villain to be revealed!
If the rinnegan can bring people back to life, then perhaps the "mangekyo" rinnegan, or elder sons eyes grant immortality, and possibly the ability to grant others with immortality (Hidan).
If this is the case you can expect a true, bloodthirsty, twisted, narcissistic, epic villain here. Think of the rituals he forces Hidan to perform (which Hidan said he hated doing but HAD to).
Elder son was obviously jealous of his father and brother and was considered unfit to be his fathers successor for some reason, presumably he was a bad dude. Perhaps evil.
Hard to say why he would be behind the scenes for so long. Perhaps he has been weakened in some way, but saw opportunity in madara and the akatsuki. Being immortal and ever patient he could have put things into motion using madara as a pawn. Infinite tsukiyomi for a perfect world might not even be his goal. He might want to make and eternal genjitsu hell, who knows.
Not trying to rant but I find the idea of the elder son coming into the story exciting and this would make sense to me. Otherwise Jashin and Hidan seem to be a big hole with big questions left unanswered. Also this final battle is a little too predictable without a curveball like this.
Typed this on my phone. I apologize in advance for possible autocorrects and repeats I couldn't see. /rant]
