Did you not notice that he has to always touch something to transfer the bugs to the target meaning close combat. The reason is because they are beetles with out wing that have a poison covered body which is why his skin turns purple because they surface and stand on top of his skin. He even has to touch them to retrieve the insects back.

Any fodder with a fireball can kill insects. The Sarutobi clan alone absolutely destroys Edo Torune.

There's a reason Kabuto never even bothered to use him in canon. He used Sai's brother Shin as a suicide bomber with a knife before using Edo Torune.
