He slaughtered his family because they were done either way whether he raised his hand against them or not. He saved the shinobi world from conflict and even saved his clan's honor by making them look like the victims & he didn't complain about it...he even shouldered everything alone. That's pretty heroic, at least in the context of this story. Itachi's portrayed and is a hero for being a shinobi, you can deny it all you want but that doesn't change the fact.

itachi is a sociopath for most of his life, and a broken bitter failure of a man for 10 minutes.

He saved the shinobi world from conflict

he helped start the worst world war in NV history, made everything much worse and harder for the heroes, unleashed evil sasuke, did nothing to stop orochimaru who did almost throw the world into war, did nothing to stop nagato, and if your talking about the coup, danzo did that. itachi just followed orders. danzo saved the fukin village.
as for the world, the world can take care of itself. konoah being weakened does not mean the other kages are going to attack. they need to have a proper reason to marshal an army and march all that way besides petty "kick them when they are down" bullshit.
people keep telling me "oh its not his job to save the other villages." fine. but since when has doing your job governed your sense of morality?
