The MTV hit show, Teen Wolf, was one of great potential and characters. But after Season 3, the ratings had hit an all-time low. Now, before I get to my opinion on why it failed to push through, I would like to start by stating that I loved the 1st and 2nd season. It was new and had a great premise.
But why did it start to fall after Season 3 or even during it? Well, I have some suggestions:
1.) Jeff Davis & the writers neglected the Sterek Fandom
Sterek was probably the biggest ship within a series with TONS of fans. I mean if you look on Tumblr, Fanfiction.Net, and even AO3, all you'll see is Sterek within the Teen Wolf Fandom section.
Jeff Davis and the writers completely neglected the Sterek fans, who was a huge part of the fandom. He baited the pairing and even took some of the suggested moments for them and used it for other characters.
Many fans got enough with the baiting, especially after Derek hooked up with Jennifer. Jennifer not only kidnapped Stiles' dad, but Derek even had her back as she did this.
So after season 3, ratings slammed, losing the Sterek fandom, which some considered as a reason why Teen Wolf survived this long. They got tired of the disrespect, even after Tyler Posey spoke against it. That is something no showrunner should ever do.
Now this is going to take the icing off the cake: The moments between Jennifer and Derek that happened in Season 3......Was supposed to be used for Sterek. But Jeff decided to scrap it for Dennifer.
2.) Less Diversity (?)
Many people began to claim that Jeff Davis was racist, because the show catered to white males while treating the characters of a minority background as a token (Despite the MC being Latino). People got pissed off with this and soon, they had enough.
I, for one, never had a problem with the concept of race when it came to the show. I just enjoyed it for what it was.
3.) Everyone is too perfect & No Real Life Issues (?)
One of the biggest complaint was the fact that everyone looked too perfect and beautiful. There wasn't a single fat character, one with acne, crooked teeth, or anything. Even the majority of the extras are all beautiful and handsome. This made fans, especially those who aren't considered "attractive enough" feel distant.
Another complaint is that there were no real issues that people are facing today (Racism, homophobia, etc.)
4.) Too many inconsistencies & characters
There are several things in Teen Wolf that just didn't make any sense. The timeline was inconsistent, many characters left the show without explanation, the pairings were beyond forced and didn't make any sense (Dennifer & Draeden I'm looking at you).
There's more issues, but I don't feel like listing them. What were your biggest issues with the show? What could the writers have done better? Please share your opinion.
