What happened to Akatsuki's army?

Pain did say that one of the plans he had was that the money Akatsuki was raising was to hire a mercenary army that would be loyal only to Akatsuki.

While Pain's plan may be different from Tobi's the organization did raised insane ammounts of money and well it had to go somewhere....... and for a war which was Tobi's plan this actually seems to be sensible.

Coupled with Zetsu fodder clones the army would be good.
