What exactly drove Itachi to look for & discover Yata & Totsuka?

I doubt he looked for them. They're not objects that he could use without Susano'o after all, if he founded them like normal objects such as a kunai or a shuriken he wouldn't needed Susano'o to wield them. He most likely awakened them along with his Susano'o.

Silly thread. Hiruzen already hinted at it. Totsuka and yata are spirit weapons. Hiruzen said that when Itachi was a kid, he wasn't a typical Uchiha who was trapped within the confines of nationalistic ideals. He scoured through ruins to look for a bigger purpose. I think that is how he found both spirit weapons. He is well versed in history so it makes sense that he would discover them.

Orochimaru pursued a myth regarding those weapons, he most likely thought they were normal objects but manga showed they're made of Susano'o material therefor cannot be wielded without Susano'o. And those myths confirms they existed before Itachi, I never said otherwise.

Than the weapons must have had a physical form beforehand, unless everyone is implying they originate from susanoo? Because Madara was the first Uchiha after Indra to be recorded having susanoo, those myths didn't come from strangers who witnessed other Uchiha with susanoo to awaken them, because that negates the fact of Madara being the first recorded, unless Indra had them, and the folktale spread through generations from his time, otherwise Totsuka and Yata were actual physical weapons, and how they were converted to spiritual susanoo weapons is all speculation.

The databook hints the complete oposite, that the regalia weapons are of religious origins, and have existed for a long time. Not an odd 70 years.(First susanno user, Madara) . Very few people have ever seen them, so much so that they are labelled as myth.

I believe they originated from Susano'o depending the user. I mean Susano'o is literally holding these so called spirits, by that logic this should be impossible as well. We know Susano'o has phyical form and it can hold these weapons phyically as well, they've shown only with Susano'o and they look like the same material.

Like you said Madara being said the first Uchiha who had Susano'o, than we found out Indra who is ancestor of Uchiha has it as well. This shows some knowladge that we've been shared because of people are highly subjective. Around 100 years ago Hashirama did all that sh*t and before he actually showed those sh*t in ET form, people of the world considered them as Fairy Tale according to Kabuto.

So it is possible there were other Uchihas who awakened MS and Susano'o before and even used these weapons but after sometime people disregarded them as folk tales.
