Well I took one of my ex gf's on a picnic once for her B-Day. She enjoyed it a lot. I also had gotten her some really neat anime stuff she wanted another time. Basically do something with her she would really enjoy. It's hard to say what gift to get here since you haven't told us much about her likes or dislikes. Jewelry isn't recommended. If you do it on her first B-Day, she will expect it from then on. If you don't have the cash, then you are out on your ass. Just my 2 cents.

I have kind of a different perspective as I am older, have been dating my girlfriend for longer, and actually have some money. I got my girl a nice jewelry box, since she needed a new one; seasons one and two of Game of Thrones, because we both love that show; and one of those Livescribe smart pens that record everything that's going on while you wrote and can digitize your notes into a searchable document. That last one will be good since we're going to grad school and good note taking is key.

To help you with your dilemma, I would dissuade you from the flowers/cheap jewelry route. Anyone can do that, and it doesn't mean anything. Sure, get her some flowers, but also get her something personal that actually means something. I know you've only been dating her for about a month now, but there's got to be something special that would only be relevant to her. If not, experiences are always a good alternative to things. Concert, art exhibit, or live theater tickets are all good ideas as they give you an opportunity to spend more time together, and you can both enjoy them.
