My question is why did Obito help kill off the Uchiha? If he wanted to destroy konoha then wouldn't the coup have done the job? What did he have to gain from the uchiha massacre? Would the coup have complicated his plans? did he really need some extra eyes? were the Uchiha a threat to him?

I believe he needed more eyes. When Obito operates on Sasuke you see shelves and shelves in the background, I'm sure they were from the attack on the Uchiha. I think he should have given all the Zetsu Sharingan >_> but he must have a plan.

I think Obito was ordered by Madara to do so.
Regardless of this I think Madara/Obito wantetd to reduce the number of other people with a Sharingan who could possibly control Bijuus.
Maybe they expecetd Itachi to be killed afterwards by other Shinobi or getting blind one day.
(I dont know if they considered that Itachi will let Sasuke stay alive.)

I think its just mechanics, what we've always heard about the Uchiha, is that it take one to defeat one. So that Kohana wouldn't be able to challenge his future plans. Also probably Madara told him too.
