Doing both at the same time however resorts in a two-dimensional stopping of movement.
Has it been done before though?

Then it's a half assed limbo.
I'd say its more likely Madara reversed the jutsu Hashi gave to Sasuke. Madara was famous for killing his enemies with their own jutsu's.
He used no hands.

No, I'm just saying that it's possible. It's not a logical explanation to this though since all spaces of Sasuke were constricted. Your theory of reversing Hashirama's technique is more plausible, but it makes no sense since no hand-signs were weaved, indicating that neither party of the battle attempted to use it.
True.
@bold:They hardly use hand seals anymore, if they do it's like only one seal Lol.

Yes, but you'd have to know what technique someone is using if you were to reverse it. Then there's the fact that Hashirama stated it was specifically for responding to sage mode, which Sasuke has not. It would be quite OP if we considered Sasuke an ability to freeze people without signs in versus threads.
Thank you.
Yeah you have a point, we'll probably never know what he truly did though, because Kishi obviously didn't find it that important :/.
He never explains the most questionable scenarios. I wish he'd just spend a day or two in an IRC chat answering questions. We'd use Google/Bing Translate obviously.
