I usually see it as rhyming with flow.
The music, i.e. the instrumental aspect, just serves to support the rapper.
It's the complete opposite to say metal, where the lyrics aren't really that important.
As much as I love hip-hop, it is musically the lesser art form.

As for the Jay-Z vs Eminem popularity poll:

Just going on skill alone, Eminem murders Jay-Z every single time. It's not even a question.
Jay-Z is a typical mafioso, studio gangster any ways. One trick pony as someone mentioned.

I love how all the white people jump on eminems bandwagon, but dont acknowledge other black artists.
Just going by the mainstream alone, Eminem is easily the most skilled.
I really don't see how that's hard to comprehend.
Name me one emcee on the mainstream that has flow, lyrics and multis like Eminem.

Now if you go by the underground then you can spout off names like MF DOOM, R.A. the Rugged Man, Gift of Gab, Elzhi and Pharaohe Monch.
But a guy like Eminem who is technically on point AND musically on point is not common on the mainstream.

They don't have multis like Eminem.

Ye is okay.

I'm not saying they're crap. They're just not skill wise, better than Eminem.

Eminem and kendrick and jay z aren't even in my top 15. That's just me though. I completely agree with what you said. IN the end no one can pass opinions off as facts on these type of discussions. What comes to my mind when I think about "Rap" music? A lifestyle branched in various forms of artistic expression that is not defined or limited to any particular demographic, which thrives in creativity. It's limitless to me.
