It did indeed get stomped, it was restrained by Hashirama's gates, which shouldn't be able to be effective on a "GOD"
It wasn't under control when it was sealed, they lost control due to Lee and Naruto remeber

Make your predictions, what power does Gai unleash when he opens the 8th gate?

Midnight dragon.

Gai his animals so far are:
Turtle=water and gai his summon.
Morning Peacock=fast punches creating fire from friction.
Afternoon/Daytime Tiger=A strong fast punch (wind).
Dragon=lightning I think.

Lightning is an element that could create darkness and earn the name midnight.
Even Kakuzu has a lightning jutsu that is called ''False Darkness''.

Earth wouldnt be able to earn the darkness name and I dont see how the gates and taijutsu
would create something earthlike (apart from the skin).

Lightning however I can see happening in combination with the dragon and the name midnight.
That Gai in the 8 gate, attracts lightning from the skies for example or from his punches.

Lightning is known for speed.
Lightning fast and in names like flying thunder god.
It is in the name .
It is an element fitting for taijutsu as well.

The sky is dark when lightning occurs (looking like midnight).

In addition we have seen Sasuke with a lightning dragon attack (Kirin).

Dragon + lightning(due to taijutsu) seems likely to me.
The 8 gate, midnight dragon and lightning.
