My uncle is in the Navy so believe me, I've seen what these people say about soldiers and it hits me where it hurts. But it's not just the Westboro Baptist Church. When my uncle got back from one of his deployments, he said to me "Stasia. . . I've been called names in other countries, and I've been spit on in our own. Just for being in uniform." It's absolutely terrible, and it makes me both angry and disappointed at the same time. But it doesn't, however, give me the right to harm another person.

Those aren't the only things that make people strong. I've experienced my own losses and I've dealt with my own problems and they've shaped me to be the person I am. But as I am today, I'm not "weak." Not hating these people and not wishing violence upon them does not make me "weak."

To be fair - you can't expect other people to know, implicitly, of your struggles.

Part of the grieving process is learning how to accept that others have difficulty understanding your experiences - especially when they have no similar experiences.

Honestly, I don't think they will process it the same way most of us do.

It would be a curious experiment to kill one of them and see if they rationalize that death as being God's revenge against them - or how that would work... but I really don't think you'd find empathy in their response.

Some people just won't process loss the same way, and will refuse to accept the consideration of other individuals.

Although I despise what they stand for, I won't stop them saying what they want to say. I served in the Marine Corps and one of the man "isms" that was beaten into my head while serving is "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

So yes, I think they are d-bags for using a horrific event that has national publicity to preach their beliefs. But they have every right to say it. They have the freedom of speech to say it, but I can punch them in the mouth after they say it.
