Madara said he died shortly after unlocking the Rinnegan. Also he clearly explained he faked his death after he fought Hashirama because he obviously was planning on using his DNA which was probably the only reason he fought him in the first place, which was to steal DNA samples from him. Hashirama died shortly after that fight anyway.
