Was the 3rd Hokage the Hokage when he started teaching the Sannin?

Something has bothered me for a while particularly ever since we saw the 2nd Hokage tell the young looking Hiruzen Sarutobi that starting tomorrow he'd be Hokage. So my question is this was the 3rd Hokage, the Hokage when he started teaching the Sannin?

To me the 3rd looked much older when he took on the sannin than when the 2nd Hokage told him he'd be Hokage. My guess is that yes he was already the Hokage, I just didn't know if anyone could verify it from the databooks.

But then again They had princess Tsundae gran-daughter of the first hokage, so that could be a reason why they or she got the hokage as their sensei

And jiarya and oro was lucky to be in her squad?

Hiruzen must have been closed to the age minato had when he became hokage.

Well yeah. The 2nd Hokage died so Hiruzen will have to be the next reigning hokage. He trained the sannins then Jiriaya trained Yondamine. Hiruzen "retired" passing the title to Yondamine, Yond died and Hiruzen picked back up the torch. So really there are were 5 instances before tsunade became hokage. Hiruzen being hokage twice.

i'm guessing jiraiya was the lucky one to even things out, much like naruto and they both turned out to be the best of the three as well

I didn't know a hokage would have personal students like that it just seems they would be to busy to oversee the complete training of children. He doesn't look too much older it's just the facial hair that makes him look different if you ask me, it was probably around the same time though.

It doesn't seem likely that the Hokage would have personal students that's why it's confusing to me. The facial hair is the main difference, but he just looks a bit older when he's teaching the sannin as kids. It could just be a drawing mistake.

Yes, He was named Hokage at Young age during the War, so Yes, he was a hokage when He was teaching the Sanins.

Yes he was. Tobirama appointed him hokage when he was just a child.
