We know it firstly belonged to Roger, it was his hat... but then why does Shanks have it while he was on his ship? I thought that was odd, that he was wearing his hat while he was still alive, because for that to be the case Roger would have had to give it to him before his death.

That would imply he was his favorite nakama, no? Or could he see into the future and gave it to Roger with the intent of it being passed to Luffy? I mean it had some sort of value obviously.

Crack prediction I keep to myself because it's a long shot, but maybe his CoO Haki level was so powerful he could peak into the future.

No... he just liked him and saw popential in him I guess...
That wouldn't mean he was significant to him, a favorite? Maybe they had a more distinct relationship than the other crew had with him.

Of course they liked eachother but Shanks like him for being the captain and his idol, Roger liked him cuz he had potential to be great, not as much as a nakama kind of way

I think Shanks got the hat... Because he was young!

What would be Rogers reason for even giving his hat away? A hat he obviously cares about, it most probably was his way of passing the torch to some-one else whom could carrie it for him, when he slowly started to get ill, but before he had to dismiss his crew.

We know he knew he was ill a while before he dismissed his crew, he told that to white beard as they sat drinking Sake, while his crew still exsisted.

It wouldn't make sense for Roger to give his hat to Raylight even though they were the closest, because Raylight was his own old age, and his glory days would be over ones Roger died.

Shanks how-ever, was just a boy! Merely starting out on his journey and had great potential to make it big on his own, so it would make way more sense for him to get the hat so he could carrie it into the next pirate era, and then maybe, even pass it on himself to the person he would consider the most likely heir to Rogers legacy.

And in the end, that hat plan of Rogers worked out perfectly! :)

Saw Shanks' potential. Shanks and Buggy were the only rookies on his crew that we know of. He knew upon his execution, all the others who had experience would call it a wrap. It made no sense to give the hat to a pirate he knew was going to be done over a newcomer who was going to continue and had potential. Shanks obviously would show far more potential than freakin' Buggy, so Roger entrusted it to him. Many have commented that Luffy is a lot like Roger, so I doubt Roger would have a favorite crewmate.

A true captain doesn't have favorites, maybe to his first mate but not for the rest of the crew. :p He probably saw the potential that Shanks had. Surely Shanks must of have been strong if he dueled with Mihawk back in the day.

The hat wouldn't fit anyone else...

It's about potential and personality similarities. Shanks doesn't abuse power, and roger would have known this from how he was on the ship. Think of it as both projecting himself onto another and giving them something to remind them of what values they stand for. Just passing on the torch really.

I think favourite is a weird way of putting it.
I think the majority of his crew were already in their prime, except Shanks and Buggy.
Anyone could figure the ones to carry on his legacy of piracy was going to be a young one and if you had to choose between Buggy and Shanks.....ehhhhh.....XD

Basically I think he figured out once he had gone the old timers would retire. Leaving Shanks and Buggy.

I actually think Rayleigh trained Shanks, not Roger, makes more sense. Both have huge similarities,
beards, swordsmen, those jam jams they where, scars, and mad haki ;)

I think he just saw potential in him to become the next king just like him. Just like Shanks did with Luffy.
I don't think he would have favourites but The Dark King would be the closest to him.

Shanks was the "Luffy" of Rogers, Luffy is the "Shanks" of Shanks. Roger saw Shanks the same way Shanks sees Luffy. He saw potential in him and knew that one day Shanks is gonna do great things. Imo he entrusted everything to Shanks but we've seen that Shanks isn't interested in all this BS so he saw in Luffy what Roger saw in him and ebtrusted everything to him. I think the Straw Hat is like a way of motivation. If Shanks hadn't given Luffy the SH then Luffy wouldn't be as motivated to get stronger and meet Shanks in the New World.
