Was Neji's death essential?

Say if it were another member of the Konoha 11 that threw themselves in front of Naruto and Hinata, would it take a huge chunk out of Hinata's character development if he didnt die? Could it have been someone else to sacrifice themselves?

I dont believe Nejis death furthered the plot in any way. Hinata did not need Neji to die in order to become more of a leader (as we saw she had already started to become stronger and more courageous in the Pain Arc when she tried to defend Naruto).

I actually think it would have been better if another character had died instead. The only plus side was that Neji was freed of the slave mark on his forehead.

Am i the only one who does not give a shit about Hinata's development when it comes to such matter? Neji had more potential than giving a fangirl a shot to have talk to her crush.

And she did not even developed that much. She is the same little fangirl who revolves around a boy and does not give a damn to others except for that boy. This abomination did not even closed Neji's eye for respect it would take a second ffs yet she did not give that second to rushing up to Naruto. Not to mention the hand comment. Horribly written.

It didn't further the plot that much. All it did was for naruto to see what it feels like to have a friend killed in battle in front of him. Hinata didn't need it, as long as it's not naruto that died she is fine.

Neji had to die because he and Hinata made each other redundant in the K11. What with having the same jutsu, they were competing with each other for panel time. Since Hinata was the less advanced Jyuuken user of the two, she hardly ever got to show a new jutsu - she was pretty much always unveiling last year's Neji jutsu, or a half-assed version of Neji's jutsu. With Neji gone, Hinata can showcase all of the new Hyuuga jutsu as Kishi thinks them up. What's more, she can go on more missions, get more panel time, and NaruHina can finally become a reality (although NaruSasu seems more likely).

If NaruHina doesn't end up happening, Neji's death will be for nothing.

It's safe to say that Neji's death itself was unnecessary.
It was for NaruHina and Hinata.
Bad writing? Kishi's writing, his choice, and his will so be it.
BS or not Neji is dead, now move on.

This result shows that how cheap his death was.
For a pairing? Really...

One fodder less to draw for Kishi, I think that was the only purpose of his death. Which is sad because he had potential.

Nope.

Not sure what purpose it was supposed to serve, because it hasn't served one. Hinata could have easily been developed without his death.

I dont see any major difference in plot before and after neji's death so it was unnecessary.
The reason neji died was lack of deaths in the war.

Neji was not fodder, for the simple reason that he was a lead charactr from one of the four ancient clans and also his character itself was actually quite noble.

if you are talking fodder, Kiba would have been a better alternative: am tired of his Fang over Fang (his only Jutsu).

I'm not a Neji fan but his death pissed me off. He did not get to shine in part 2, he did not even fight/met his edo father and was used to make shy little hinata hold Naruto's hands and make comments about it.

it's not decided now, i believe it's necessary for hinata's development after the war.

Never was a huge fan of his but if you're really a Neji fan be happy the guy is dead. He's getting more respect now than he ever did alive. Rather him be dead and appreciated than alive and forgotten. He's been talked about more since that chapter than he ever was, and if Kishi isn't going to treat him like a great character and give him proper screen time, why not turn him into a fallen hero

some one had to die, so neji was just a victim of the war nothing more.
