Was Naruto ever actually really good or were we fooling ourselves?

I thought it was great, I do agree the quality started to lack after Obito was revealed to be Tobi. It was dragged out a bit, and then felt really rushed towards the end after Obito was defeated. I think a lot of the resentment from other fans comes from things not playing out how they wanted it to though, which is a little unfair since the manga and story is Kishi's a no one else's. I do agree with the guy who said Kishi took on too much at the end. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.

This, I will agree wholeheartedly.

I wasn't fooling myself, the recent sub-par chapters do not, in any way, lessen the quality and impact the Manga had on me prior to Tobi's identity being revealed.

As mentioned above, for now i'd really give it a 7.5. By the end however, i'll probably go soft (endings do that to me), plus remembering characters like Itachi Uchiha will make me give it a final 8/10.

Yes. It wouldn't have made it over a decade if it hadn't been one. The cool thing was watching Kishi's artwork improve as the series went on too. Compare chapter 3 to this most recent one, it's like night and day. The story was wonderfully crafted up until the 5 Kage arc. That's when I began to lose interest and I lost interest in the war until it narrowed down to Obito, Madara, and Kabuto.

I wonder, what did everybody expect at the Kage Summit regarding the war? Tobi, Kisame, Zetsu and Taka vs 5 nations. I think nobody expected Kabuto + his edos. We had some great fights (although it could have been in more detail). We had some twists as Itachi freeing himself from Kabuto's control, the appereance of the past Kages, Madara and the past Hokages resurrection. It could have been better, I agree, at the summit I expected a big bomb boom boom fight with the bijuus during the war.

It was good until Nagato revived most of Konoha. The war arc in particular has been pretty poor, I'd say the manga peaked around the chunin exam arc and was solid until the end of the Pain arc before it dipped into the pits of hell during the war arc.
