Think about it. the reason he was named uzumaki was for his own protection. however, look what it brought naruto. he started off as a fodder character with no name to be compared to (since uzumaki's were pretty much nonexistent). he had no special foster parents protection program, and worst the only thing he was remembered as was a prankster with the kyuubi inside him that was responsible for killing families and nearly destroying the village. which forced naruto into deep depression as a child who had to hide his tears in fake smiles and even went as far to make "best friends" with sasuke uchiha even thou they clearly had absolutely no friendly interaction just because they both were alone, which ultimately made naruto obsessive to bring sasuke back, despite the abuse he has to go through with. lol

on the flip side.
if he was named naruto namikaze, he will be a target by enemies. however at the sametime he would be known by other people including his age group as the son of the hokage. sure, naruto could still be lonely, cause sasuke was also lonely despite having a famous name and people knowing him. but what makes sasuke special is that he HAD those bonds then lost it. naruto is not the same case, he NEVER had any bonds. it can only get better for him, which is exactly what happened. as for the taboo of being known as the host of the kyuubi, yeah that will be a stigma naruto must carry, however at the sametime, he will be embraced as the son of the father who saved the village. it's 50/50. no longer 100% kyuubi stigma. and it's possible that with the name namikaze, he might would've been allowed to be the student of jiraiya much sooner and maybe even learn rasengan at a much earlier time. which could've kept naruto from being the complete goof ball prankster that he was. so tell me, was it worth it?

uzumaki

pro- protection
pro- start fresh, won't be overshadowed by father.
pro- sarutobi paid his rent

con-
no famous name brand
remembered as kyuubi host
yada yada yada (the con list would take forever)

namikaze

pro- son of the 4th hokage, the yellow flash.
pro- son of kushina, (which means he would know she married hokage)
pro- higher chance of making friends as a kid
pro- kyuubi stigma won't be as much of an burden.
pro- make his hokage dream seem more believable
pro- could've had a teacher at a younger age.
pro- the ashura/indra destiny would still happen regardless in some way
pro- possible chance he would've reached KCM sooner than waiting till chapter 500. (minato did)

con- no protection
con- possibility that ashura/indra (naruto/sasuke) would not of had cooperation.

(no, i'm not taking the road of ninja movie as a canonical possibility)

edit: ignore the namikaze typo error in the poll title.

Nope. Nobody would have given a shit if he was the Hokage's son.

If anything, besides being the Jinchuriki, being an Uzumaki was a threat, as they were known to be inherently powerful. Kushina and Karin were taken specifically for that reason themselves.

How much was Gaara targeted for being the son of the Kazekage? None, so far as we know.
How much was Asuma targeted for being the son of the Hokage? None.
How much is Konohamaru targeted for being the grandson of the Hokage? None.

In the end, it was for a dramatic reveal. Do Kage not have children? Do they not have protocols in place for the protection of these children?

perhaps no one would give a shit, but you know who would give a shit? the only person that mattered. naruto himself. as for the protection thing, i think the threat is honestly a exaggeration. sure he would be targeted, but naruto would also have more elite protection from jounin's. which is a chance he would still get kakashi or some one better. hell, it'd probably mean jiraiya would be obligated to take care of naruto sooner and train him. naruto will be trained more and wouldn't be as weak as he was at the debut. the risk is worth the reward.

"con - no protection" is putting it lightly. he wouldve been targeted a loooot probably.
doubt it. even the akatsuki knew of naruto as the bijuu host and still struggled to get him. which i consider is more important than being the father of minato, if anything, fodder enemies would probably be more scared of someone having that last name than the host of a bijuu.

But what differ is naruto have tailed beast. Just look at gaara being target by akatsuki not because he is son of kage or kage but they aim for the tailed beast.

Namikaze is a no name, no clan sines as Jiraiya pointed out Minato Namikaze is a name given to an Orphan. The name only became famous or infamous because of Minato’s jutsu the Thunder god jutsu. Without it and the Rasengan Minato would never ben Hokage, just a plain ordinary Orphan Ninja. Uzumaki on the other hand is the Name of a World famous Clan, cousin to the Senju,Uchiha and Hyuga’s. Co-founders of Konoha, who do you think mediated between Senju and Uchiha. Uzumaki fuinjutsu Masters. Kishi wanted history and betrayal at the same time. Konoha forgetting who the Uzumaki were and their contributions to Konoha. ironic Naruto was Konoha Un-known prince.

It was Mizuki.

And the people of the village knew he was the Jinchuuriki. He was already a target to begin with. I'm surprised he wasn't targeted earlier in the Manga.
I mean Hiruzen should have never revealed the status to the village. Like how no one knew Kushina's status.

You got a point though. He would have been targeted for looking like the Yondaime at some time.
