Was Kakashi actually serious?

I actually think Kakashi would have pulled it through, although he would be exhausted. Kakashi is skilled with his MS, I'm certain Obito realised this and intervened causing them both to warp into the different dimension.

Kind of disappointing that one jutsu would be able to get rid of the "legendary" juubi, but Obito's reaction shows that it would have worked.
