Though, it isn't something that wasn't beneath him doing, so it wasn't that BIG of a surprise in the end.

this was more or less my take on that. I was willing to give Kiri the benefit of the doubt because they were known to use certain methods in taking out enemies to compensate for their lack of numbers, but i suppose that panel where a Zetsu mentions them being guinea pigs was a dead giveaway that Madara was behind it.
