He was manipulating Kirigakure before awakening Rinnegan. So they destroyed Uzumaki clan which was part of his plan.

He also had Zetsu performs deeds for him while he was old. As for Obito, it was luck the kid came out of nowhere.

Aside from his battle skills, Madara has also displayed high-level intellect, drawing from both his naturally keen instincts and perception as well as advanced years of experience. His mental prowess made him dangerously strategic and analytical skills, which has earned him praise from even his rival during their final battle.[189] His talents for manipulation and preparation even allowed him to create elaborate plans that span across decades, even accommodating for his period of death, as seen with his Eye of the Moon Plan and setting up various pawns by playing with and twisting their own ideals, feelings and goals, in order to aid him through direct or indirect ways equipping them with everything they would need to carry out his plans. Madara has displayed enough forethought and foresight in his planning; particularly by putting his will into the chakra receivers he placed in the restored half of Obito Uchiha's body to force his student into reviving Madara in the event that the plan is ruined in anyway.[190]

He is an adept tactician as seen when he preferred to use the Ten-Tails' matured powers to destroy the Allied Forces HQ in order to obliterate their intelligence centre, rather than directly engaging the Allied Forces army.[191] Madara himself was aware and made use of the kamikaze-like fighting style that the Impure World Reincarnation allowed due to the technique's regenerative powers as seen when he sent a meteorite hurtling towards the battlefield where he was facing the Fourth Division.[192] Madara is also versed in psychological warfare, choosing to focus his efforts into breaking the battle spirits of his adversaries through manipulation and intimidation with deliberate displays of his overwhelming power. He targets the enemies that have the greatest charisma and leadership skills of a group, such as Ōnoki,[193][194][195] and Naruto on separate occasions. He is highly knowledgeable of various techniques, able to deduce the workings of unfamiliar ones and how to counter them, even break the control of the Impure World Reincarnation Technique. In the anime, his mental prowess in battle is further shown. Even when being "pressured" by thousands of enemies, he remains composed, adaptable, and calculating, quickly able to adjust to any new development and change his battle tactics effortlessly

I think it was Madara who manipulated Obito to see this world with "no hope" and I also think he was the one who made up all that scene where he was trapped and got to Madara's hideout.

First, he stole the First Hokage's cells during their duel and used them to to both gain the Rinnegan and Wood Release kekkei genkai and grow an army of Zetsu, and when he was old and dying passed his Rinnegan on to Nagato so that he could be resurrected with the Rinne Tensei technique once the Ten Tails was revived.

He took the mortally wounded Obito Uchiha, named him his successor, and patched him up using Zetsu cells so that if something happened to botch Nagato resurrecting him and/or he was brought back with Edo Tensei, he could simply hijack Obito's Zetsu cells and force him to use Rinne Tensei to fully revive him when the time came to become the Ten Tails' junchuriki. Even when that backfired, his smirk and comment of "I failed, huh..." hinted towards a backup plan: have Black Zetsu hijack Tobi's attempt to use the Rindo Tensei in order to presumably revive the people he had killed and force his student into reviving him instead.
