What was Naruto doing throughout the chapter? Standing besides Sarada and making sure she wouldn't get hurt. What was Sasuke doing? Fighting on the front lines against the Akatsuki Leader, both of them were doing their jobs, right? It all started to slowly whither when the Akatsuki Leader gained an advantage by touching Sasuke's sword. Basically he gained an ace in the hole.

When the sword impaled Naruto, thanks to them not having full intel on his abilities, Sarada was left open for attack. There really isn't anyone to blame aside from being overconfident and underestimating their opponent. But imagine a sick turn of events if the Akatsuki Leader decided to stab Sarada instead of Naruto.

Could he have done more? Well yeah, for one he could of created a shadow clone to watch Sarada or to fight the Akatsuki leader instead of being stagnate. It's a bit of shame that every character in Team 7 has fought Shin (any Version) without babysitting a child, except Naruto (Sasuke Chapter 2, and Sakura just now). Though I think people are harshly judging these "nerfs" a bit unfairly.

Same goes with Sasuke, he wasn't thinking straight and he plunged straight into the enemy without assessing their skills and abilities and learned only through failure (after Naruto was stabbed). Not to mention he had to repent his mistake by sacrificing his own body (albeit not damaged severely) still though for some reason he could not even use hisS/T jutsu to teleport himself and Sarada, and then dodge the spikes with his own speed/shunshin.

Sasuke and Naruto could of done so many things different but Sasuke told Naruto to leave Shin Senior to him and protect the girls which Naruto did and told Sasuke to not let his guard down guess he failed in that respect.

I think that's the problem ... They both let their guard down by not judging what the opponent can or cannot do, which is why when one was taken under their trick (Sasuke's sword) the other one got stabbed (Naruto).

I think this is just something that happened when they became too powerful in such a short amount of time.

naruto could've used kagebushin. Sasuke could've used susano'o. This whole thing reeks of plot nerf. We should've seen it coming. Naruto and sasuke are too strong to have an actual enemy without being nerfed

There was a clear division of responsibility done by Sasuke.Naruto was to look after the kids and once Sasuke created an opening he was to take them away.But Naruto in response said he had to be ready for anything because the enemy was unpredictable.
That did not mean he should just chill back and relax,he should also have known he would possibly be targeted as Salad was with him.

It's pretty simple, and you mentioned it yourself somewhere in your OP.

Their mistake was underestimating their opponent, Naruto was taken completely by surprise when he was stabbed, no one thought that Sasuke's own sword would move by itself.

That made Sarada open like you said and Sasuke's emotions took the better of him and he made the rash decision of shielding her with his own body instead of using something like Susanoo.

Those are the only reasons they were seemingly on the back foot, otherwise only 1 of them could easily obliterate Shin and his whole squad.

Both of them have lost BATTLE AWARENESS more than anything. They have not combated in a long time, so even if their attacks are just as powerful or stronger, they don't assess the battle situation optimally.

Isn't that what naruto did? He was assessing the battle from afar, and Sarada was safe inside of Kurama`s Avatar head. I doubt any of them suspected the attack to come from the inside, especially since they were all protected by Kurama. Which is why the Leader had the Ace. They really underestimated him here.

He should of sensed his Katana being taken from his hand at least and reacted in kind, Sasuke's senses are lacking or don't exist.

Considering the fact that both Naruto and Sasuke didnt sense/see the sword leaving the hand and hitting Naruto,then it must have been instant

If it was intant then this telekensis argument people using is invalid because their definition of it is the object being moved from one point to another key word moved.

Look at the fight again, I meant Naruto was watching the Leader with his MS ability when he used his "son" as a shield. Naruto didn't seem to know about the telekinesi, in the sense of being 100%. They confirmed it after.
