Because his decade-spanning plan for world peace was flipped 180 degrees because he related to a character in a book, described by his main enemy and target, a 16 year old kid he had never met.
You think that was nagatos plan? Did you miss that part where tobi said he created akatsuki and even Konan was surprised

He was the first character being talked into consideration. But honestly he was the 2nd best villain after Obito. His plan and dream was solely peace and he tried as hard as he could to defeat Naruto. The battle between Pain and Naruto is one of the greatest Manga battles in history. And I don't see where the bad writing is here. He was bound to become good at some point, Naruto was clearly able to talk him into consideration making him actually trust in Naruto.

That has nothing to do with a single part of this thread... Nagato had his own plans for Akatsuki, separate from Obito's entirely.

It's bad writing, because in all of Nagato's plans for peace, he apparently never once thought "maybe it's being nice to people instead..." And when presented with this oh-so-obvious option, he embraced it with open arms for no reason.

This plot point made Nagato look like the dumbest character in manga history.

as most people on here, your perception is surface only. It wasn't just that, he saw the power Naruto had and he believed in that as well, if Naruto was some weakling that Nagato could beat like hanzo, then he wouldn't trust him, but Naruto had the power, conviction and belief that he could change the world, and Nagato believed in that. So he sacrificed his life to revive the people who he killed in konoha and died to redeem himself. After speaking with Naruto, he was able to realize that his ways were wrong, there wasn't anyone up till then who resembled Nagato so much.

You said he had a decade spanning plan, when that's not the case since the plan was not his. All the trio wanted to do was settle fights through democracy until yahiko died.
