The sage was a priest (The era before ninja is clearly the warren state era as evdidence of their clothing.
It was not uncommon at all to see traveling monks and priest defending humans against demons and evil spirits.
With that being said the sage sealed(Funinjustu)the juubi.
He went on to have two sons.
One inherited the psychical energy(Yang) of the sage and his good will.(Peace through love)
The uzumaki are known for their funinjustu and have a strong vitality,it grants them longevity
(That is how powerful their life force is)
Another prospect of their strong bodies is their selection to being jinchuuriki EVERY SINGLE TIME IN THE LEAF.
And every uzumaki has been shown to survive the extraction something which has been pointed out to kill you.You die if your tailed beast is extracted........Uzumaki don't.
Now here we see the senju and uzumaki.The uzumaki are already know to live long lives.Here is a pictre of hashirama senju and the uzumaki clan leader.The uzumaki clan leader is clearly older then hashirama.Way older.By extension every uzumaki is most likely to live longer then any senju.This should be somewhat proof that the uzumaki have been around longer or at that point.
This son or shall i say the uzumaki clan kept in touch with their descendants the senju.
The evidence is clear.The uzumaki have always been the host for kurama.ALWAYS.
Are we going to say that the senju gave birth to a greater clan endowed with MORE psyhcal energy then itself ?No it is the other way around.The uzumaki gave birth to the senju and the senju came to have powerfl psyhical bodies but,did not retain the longevity of the uzumaki.When new clans are born they don't get more traits.Traits get diluted.It is common sense.All you need as evidence is the uchiha ancestor dojustu to the uchiha dojustu.
So here it is the sage had two sons one inherited (UZUMAKI)the body oF the sage.
The other,the uchiha ancestor inherited his spiritual energy and the more or less attributes from the juubi itself (This is why they can control tailed beast they share the same chakra origins)and jealous of his brother used the idea of power to bring peace.This caused a rift and they did not keep in touch and eventually became rivals.
And lastly the rinnegan is made up of the progenitor gene kishi made it clear and even tittled a chapter called "PROGENITOR"
Now a progenitor gene will not rise with diluted blood or dna.It needs the exact dna to make it happen.

But,nagato was ablet to use it.How is that so ?
A progenitor gene is formed when the exact dna they split apart is brought back together.
