The difference is every other Strawhat has accepted Luffy as their captain
Vice-captain is not something Zoro can just proclaim upon himself.
Every other member has to accept that aswell , it has to be unanimous .
If Zoro would take a leading role when Luffy is absent the chances of atleast 1 SH not agreeing would be very high. Since everyone is equal Zoro his opinion or authority is of no higher then any other.
On the other hand when Luffy is sleeping or gone w/e and Nami would give orders no one would complain and directly do as instructed.
Outsiders opinions on who is the vice captain or first mate does not matter at all

Like i've said, Zoro is the Marco of the Strawhats pirates. Whitebeard had no first mate himself, but Marco was the one taking charge of practically everything outside Whitebeard himself, making him the second authority on board without any official title. Luffy doesn't care about titles just like Whitebeard didn't as long as he had a family around him. The strawhats are already accepting Zoro's authority above the rest but unofficially. It's for that reasons that everytime that Luffy isn't there, the group becomes Zoro's group

Because now you just sound butthurt. The world 'first mate' that we use irl has a vastly different definition. That definition refers to merchant ships. Not pirates. They're way of doing things is different. And Zoro has been referred to as the First Mate more often than the self appointed FM, Usopp. And like I said, the One Piece verse uses the term differently, referring to the first recruit of the ship.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about. The SH have no official FM. It's the captain and then everyone else is a subordinate. Hell, even Luffy isn't exactly a typical captain who bosses his crew around.

You can only form your own opinion about who would be the FM if it is designated or who would take over the crew if Luffy was killed and the rest of the crew decided to find OP in his honour.

IMO, I don't see Usopp taking over at all. The 'proof' that you used was a gag about Usopp wanting to be captain and living his fantasy. Luffy just said it to get Usopp to stop acting as captain. If I had to choose the stand in captain or FM, I would have to say Zoro. The most common traits of a FM are that he is the second strongest and also the first to be recruited. Besides, Zoro has been stated by other characters to be FM the most and is second most highly reputed SH after Luffy himself. This was seen in Rayleigh from Roger pirates. But like I said, it's just my opinion, because I can't prove (neither can anyone else) that a there is FM in SH.

Usopp and Chopper are far too inexperienced and in Usopp's case, he is too weak and somewhat cowardly. He needs motivation to act bravely.

Well, since there is no official FM, everyone can decide for themselves who would make the finest FM in their opinion. But what's the need for flaming and neg repping for having an opinion different from yours? Seriously, isn't that the whole point of this community to share your opinions and ideas? If you can't bear others' opinions and just hold yours firmly, there is no point of being here.

Nami only gives orders when it's to do with navigation or something less serious like investigating, when shit goes down and luffy isn't there the whole crew looks towards zoro and maybe sanji to lead, back when the crew decided to split up in saboady luffy zoro and sanji had a mini meeting where they decided it'd be best if they split up since the rest of the crew looks up to those three when shit hits the fan
