I suggest reading at least the prologue if you are just coming into this FF.
Unfulfilled Desires
Desires are funny things; if we want something but can’t have it, we try and convince others (and thereby convince ourselves) that we don’t really want it. Deep down though, the desire never really leaves, and when the time comes, it influences our actions more than we care to admit.
A junkyard is a place filled with things that are undesirable for most people, yet there is no other place in the world the Winchesters would rather be than in Bobby’s Junkyard in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
To a stranger, Bobby Singer himself leaves much to be desired. Gruff, sarcastic, an ugly mullet, all those are accurate descriptions of him, yet somehow they can’t capture who he is. Beneath all that is the real Bobby, one who has his own desires; wants and needs that will remain unsaid.
“This is so badass!”
“Dean, this is serious! You need to stop acting like an idiot. You make a mistake and you die.”
Dean was excited, but scared as well, this would be his first solo hunt. His dad had never let him go on one alone, had always told him he wasn’t ready. To Dean, it was more than just his first hunt alone, it was an affirmation of his dad’s trust and belief in Dean. This was why Dean found it so hard to be serious right then; he was about to go into a potentially life threatening situation but all of his thoughts were on how good his father’s approval felt.
Sam’s voice broke Dean’s contemplation, “Why can’t I go too? Dean gets to go, and I don’t want to sit here all weekend by myself!”
“And what am I, chopped liver?” Bobby asked Sam in a mock serious tone.
“That isn’t what I mean, you and my dad can hang out, but I have no one my age here.”
Bobby laughed a little on the inside at Sam’s statement. If he thought that John ever “hung out” then he must not know John very well. Beneath that thought though, Sam also struck another note, reminding Bobby how empty his house was when the Winchesters weren’t there.
Dean broke in saying, “I’m just getting to go on my first solo hunt and I’m almost 18, what makes you think that you get to go on yours at 12?”
“C’mon you idgit, we’ll find you something to do here.” Bobby motioned for Sam to follow him.
Outside Sam was still pestering Bobby, “Why does Dean get to go on a solo hunt?”
“Don’t you ever stop talking?” Bobby joked. “Your dad can’t really go on a hunt with him now can he? You don’t just walk away from torture like nothing happened, he is still recovering.”
“Well what about you then? How come you can’t go with him?”
“Because someone has to stay here and make sure you don’t get into too much trouble while your dad is bedridden. Why don’t you want him to go alone, you worried about him Sammy?”
Sam was immediately on the defensive, “Not at all, I just think that it isn’t fair that he gets to go by himself and I don’t.”
“Alright Sam, whatever you say.” Bobby didn’t push the issue because Sam’s face told what his words wouldn’t let him.
Inside John and Dean go over the details of the case before Dean headed out.
“Alright so here is what we know, three males have gone missing over the past two weeks. They were all last seen on this street though, where all the nightclubs and bars are, so that might be the best place to start.”
Dean thought to himself that he couldn’t have picked a better case to go out alone on. Clubs and bars on the weekend, there had to be some hot girls there.
“I know what you’re thinking Dean; remember though that a drunk hunter is a dead hunter. Wait until the case is over, then you can have your fun.”
“I’ll be careful dad, no beer until I’ve solved it. Is that everything?”
“That’s all we’ve got for now, you’ll have to find out more on your own.” John tossed Dean the keys to the Impala, warning him, “If you wreck that car Dean, you had better hope that monster finds you before I do."
“Don’t worry so much.” Dean said as he made a beeline for the door. “Later Sam, see ya Bobby!” Dean called to them. He turned the keys and floored it, loving the roar of the engine. John just shook his head as his eldest son tore down the driveway listening to ‘Radar Love’.
“Alright Sam, I’ve got something for you to do to keep you out of trouble. Just go that way about thirty feet or so…no a little bit farther, ok you’re good. Now I’m going to teach you how to throw.”
Sam looked at Bobby skeptically, saying, “I already know how to throw knives Bobby, you should teach me something else.”
“I’m not going to teach you to throw knives, just hang on a second and you’ll see.”
“Are you going to teach me to catch knives then? Is that why I’m all the way down here?”
“Well if you would shut up with the questions then you would know!!” Bobby said in exasperation. He bent down to the duffle bag; when he pulled his hand out Sam inquired, “A football Bobby? Shouldn’t we be doing something useful? My dad says that if something can’t protect me or kill something, then we don’t have time for it.”
Bobby thought it was crazy that Sam wanted to train instead of having fun.“Yeah well as of right now your dad has a lot of free time, and so do we.” As he said that though Bobby was reminded of his conversation with John earlier.
“Since we’ll be down here for at least another week I want you to teach him how to pick locks and get out of being tied up. After what happened to me I think we all need to practice getting out of places.”
“Fine, but remember John that he’s just a kid, he can’t be hunting or training all the time. It’s not good for him.”
“I’ll decide what is good for him; I’m the boy’s father, not you.”
“Well then maybe you should start acting like a father instead of a drill sergeant. You can’t treat him like a soldier, he’s your son.”
“And he’s not your son Bobby.”
“Catch Sam” Bobby called out as he threw him the football. Sam needed to have fun, and Bobby felt that if John wouldn’t have play with Sam sometimes then he would.
Dean was headed into Hermosa, a town neighboring Sioux Falls. He was so distracted while cruising the streets there that he almost crashed. Hermosa, as it turned out, was a college town, and Dean’s attention was focused on all the girls on the sidewalks.
“Watch where you’re going!” one of the attractive girls yelled.
“How about I watch you instead?” Dean replied before continuing on down to the street his hotel was on. “This is going to be so sweet!”
Dean felt like taking a nap but he knew he should get some information from the locals while it was still light outside. At night everyone where he was going would be at the bars or some club, and information from someone who was drunk was often unreliable. Dean also found it hard to sleep in rooms like these; shabby motels usually had yellowed wallpaper stained with age and who knows what else. He had never seen these rooms as anything more than a place to pass the night, and he wasn’t going to spend any more time in one than he had to, lord knows he had years more to spend in them.
“What can you tell me about these men?” Dean asked the bartender as he showed him the pictures of the missing men.
“Nothing that anyone else couldn’t tell you, they were the type to be out all night, regulars at most of the bars around here.”
“Can you remember the last time that you saw any of these men?”
“Must have been a few days before their deaths, I’m not sure about the others but this guy was always at the strip club down the street some, said he liked going down there for the buffet.”
“Why else would someone go to a strip club?” Dean asked jokingly, “Do they have cheeseburgers there?”
Outside the strip club, Dean was having a tough time negotiating his way past the bouncer, “I’m sorry I left my ID at my dorm room, can’t you just let me go in? I go to college here, I’ll bring by my ID later.”
“No ID, no entry. Sorry buddy, it’s the rules. I don’t make them I just enforce them.”
“Look I know some guys in there right now, if you just let me go get them you can verify my age with them.”
“Ah just let him in, Joe” a man in a suit said to the bouncer.
“Yes sir Mr. Franklin.”
Dean thought that this guy in the suit looked shady. Outwardly he was presentable; he had a nice suit, a pretty friendly face, and a big smile. His eyes though looked Dean up and down, like he was appraising him, trying to find out just how much Dean was worth to him, and how much he could get from him. “Thanks mister…Franklin, was it?”
“Yeah, no problem, now what can I do for you kid? I can’t really have minors in this place, but you were trying really hard to get in for some reason, what was it?”
“I just wanted to ask some questions about the men that went missing recently. Someone told me that this guy,” Dean pointed to a picture of one of the men, “came here often. Do you have any idea about what happened to him?”
“And what does it matter to you, kid?”
“One of them… one of the missing men is my uncle, I just want to see if I can help find him.” Dean’s choked reply was very convincing, years of practice had made him an expert at lying, something that he wasn’t always proud of.
“I’m sorry kid, all of those guys were here a day or two before they went missing, but that is all I know. They all left with some girls though, and we have witness that can verify them leaving the club.”
Confused Dean asked, “They left with girls? I thought this was a strip club, not a brothel.”
“Hey I keep it legal, if the girls want to go out and do their thing then that is up to them. I don’t ask them what they do in their free time, and I don’t want to know.”
“Fair enough, thanks for your time. I’ll be back next time I’m in town.”
“What for? Expecting another uncle to go missing?”
“The buffet of course!” Dean said in mock disbelief.
Dean went back to his motel room and slept for a few hours, getting sleep while he could, before he had to go back out to keep watch on the strip club.
When he woke up he noticed it was dusk, the sky was a purplish haze, crowded urban areas rarely had stars, the lights covered up any real beauty that was there.
“Well time to have some fun!”
Dean drove over to the strip club and parked right behind it, thinking that if something was going to happen it would be in the dark alleys behind the clubs and bars, not the well lit streets.
Hours passed and all Dean saw was a homeless person peeing, and a middle-aged man making out with an older stripper. The stripper went back in the building afterwards though and the man got into his car and drove away.
Dean was beginning to believe that this was a dead end and that he had wasted his night. His stomach’s growling broke his train of thought though and he was reminded that he hadn’t eaten since he had gotten to town.
Dean thought his best bet was probably to try and sneak into the strip club through the back so that he could eat at the buffet. He was just about to try and pick the lock when the door started to open. Startled, he hid behind the door, hoping to sneak in while whoever it was had their back turned.
Walking in Dean found himself in the kitchen. “Hey, what are you doing in here!?” yelled one of the cooks.
“I just wanted to thank the chef for a fantastic buffet, really top notch.” Dean flashed his smile and gave the cooks a lame thumbs up.
“Thanks, but get back into the club, you’re not supposed to be back here.”
“Sorry about that, thanks again.” Dean couldn’t believe how gullible people were. Give them a compliment and they became willing to believe anything you said.
He headed for the buffet, grabbing plates of food, wanting to fill up in case he needed to stay up all night. Needed to? What was he thinking? He was in a strip club; he wanted to stay up all night!
Dean leaned back lazily in his chair, feeling stuffed after his meal. He really needed to get back outside, but he kept telling himself he might as well stay in here, this was where the action was (and not just the kind about his case).
“Hey cutie, you want a dance?” A beautiful young girl asked Dean. She was scantily clad in a skin-tight bikini, her light brown hair reflecting the dim lighting of the room. Dean was awestruck by how beautiful she was, her light blue eyes seemed to pierce him, and her smile was bright and inviting. He just sat there silently, checking her out, when she said, “Are you going to say something or just stare at me all night?”
“I’m just realizing how it feels to be Richard Gere.”
“What?”
“Well I’m talking to a Pretty Woman!”
“Aren’t you the flatterer, so how about that dance?”
“I’m not that easy, you’re going to have to work harder than that.” Dean’s humor and laid back attitude was irresistible to most women, and this one was no exception.
“Do you mind if I sit down then?” the woman asked as she sat on Dean’s lap.
“Feel free, so what is your name?”
“My real name?”
Dean nodded saying, “What other name would I want?”
With a small sigh the girl said, “Well most people don’t want to know my real name, they want my stripper name. I guess knowing my real name makes me seem more real to them so they feel bad. It’s easier to pretend when you don’t know anything about the stripper I guess.”
“Well I want your real name.”
“Amber.” Amber gave Dean a genuine smile then, saying, “No one has ever tried to have a real conversation with me here. I think I’m going to like you, by the way what is your name honey?
“My real name? Or my spy name?”
Giggling Amber replied, “Your real name.”
“I’m Dean.”
“Well Dean it is nice to meet you. I’m about to get off work soon, would you want to get some coffee?”
“Coffee sounds good, but what about that dance Amber?”
“Sorry Dean, you missed your shot” she said as she walked away from him.
“I’ll wait for you out in the parking lot then!” Dean called after her.
Exiting the strip club, the bouncer just stared at him, utterly confused about how Dean had gotten in there. “You missed out on all the fun buddy, maybe next time.” The bouncer just glared at Dean as he went to his car.
In a diner, Amber and Dean talked over coffee and pancakes. “That is an awesome car Dean, where did you get it?”
“My dad let me borrow it while I’m at school.”
“You go to college here? I’ve never seen you there before; it isn’t that big if a college, are you new?”
Dean, aware that he had painted himself into a corner tried to change the topic, “Yeah just started going, but what are you doing at that strip club? You seem way too nice to be working there.”
“Well I’m not as nice as you think Dean, “Amber said with a wink, “but somebody has to pay for college. Not a whole lot of opportunities in South Dakota. You do what you have to make ends meet.”
Dean knew that was the truth, he had seen enough poverty traveling across the country with his dad and brother.
“Dean, I was wondering, what are you doing tonight? Would you mind giving me a ride home?”
“Yeah sure thing, let me just finish up these pancakes and we’ll head out.”
Driving down the street Amber said to Dean, “You can just pull over here Dean.”
“Why? This isn’t your dorm.” Instead of answering Amber just leaned over and kissed Dean.
“You’re a really sweet guy Dean, and very cute, I just wanted to thank you.” Amber crawled over and sat on Dean’s lap facing him.
“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather do this in your dorm room Amber?” Dean was a little skeptical about being out in the open like that.
“Well I don’t think my roommate would be too happy, why don’t we go to your place?”
“Alright but I’m in a motel room right now since I just got here. I haven’t found a place to stay yet.” Dean almost felt bad lying to her, but after Amber kissed him again his guilt just washed away.
Back in the motel room Dean and Amber were tearing off each other’s clothes, Amber pushed Dean onto the bed taking off her shirt before she sat down on top of him. Dean went to unsnap her bra but she pushed his hand away gently saying, “Not yet Dean, the anticipation is what makes it good.”
She kissed Dean passionately then, but this kiss felt different than those before, it made him feel better but it also left him drained, like he had just run a mile.
“What was that?” Dean asked in a panic.
“What was what Dean?” Amber said, smiling her beautiful smile.
“I feel different, weaker somehow.”
“You’re just excited Dean, I know what you need.” Amber kissed him again and Dean felt it once more, that draining sensation like there was some sort of current flowing between him and Amber. Realization hit Dean.
“Do you know anything about those men that went missing Amber?”
“Let’s not talk about stuff like that now Dean, it is kind of a mood killer.”
Dean talking to himself, said, “Damnit, every single time I’m with a girl she either is a monster or she gets killed by one. Why can’t I just meet a normal college girl who works as a stripper?
“Monster? So that makes you a hunter I take it?” Amber’s physical features didn’t change, but somehow she became more menacing and less appealing to Dean.
“You’re a succubus!” Dean shoved Amber, rolled off the bed and reached for his bag, grabbing his knife before he popped up.
“You can’t kill me Dean.” Amber shoved him as he tried to slash at her. Her strength was inhuman.
“We’ll see about that b**ch.” Dean tackled her, pinning her against the wall. “I really liked you, it sucks that it has to end like this.” Dean said as he pushed the blade into her heart.
Falling back Dean just sighed.
“I told you that you couldn’t kill me Dean.” Amber pulled the knife out of her chest and threw Dean into the wall. Standing over him she went down for a kiss, she wasn’t going to ruin her meal by killing him.
Before she could drain him completely a knife found her heart and she fell forward, disappearing into smoke before she hit Dean. Standing over Dean was Bobby, knife in one hand, the other outstretched to Dean.
Instead of thanks though Dean angrily said, “What did Dad send you here because he didn’t trust me to do it by myself?” The lack of faith from his father was infuriating, this was just like him.
“No you idgit I came because you didn’t call like you were supposed to. You were supposed to check in four hours ago.”
Dean took Bobby’s hand saying, “So he didn’t send you?”
“Nope, came on my own. Now let’s get out of here.”
Confused Dean asked, “Wait a minute, how come when I stabbed her it didn’t kill her but she died when you did?
“Only someone who doesn’t desire what the succubus has to offer can kill one. Why do you think they attack people during ***?”
“Are you telling me you wouldn’t want that girl? Did you see her?”
“Only her back, and why would I want a succubus anyway? I knew what she was as soon as I got here.”
“So what do you desire Bobby?” Sam asked inquisitively.
Bobby thought of Sam laughing as he and Bobby played football instead of training. Putting his arm around Dean and helping him stand up he said, “I don’t want anything, I’ve got what I need.”
