I dont' see how he would have gotten demoted, I mean, I just don't get it. Not that I am fighting the idea, but losing his powers seems a bit odd.

And weren't all Espada once Vasto Lorde's before they transformed into an Arrancar?

simply ebcuase he knew that their base would get attacked by ichigo and
he sees that ulquiorra will gain from his fight with ichigo, or maybe ichigo will gain from his fight with, meh nevermind i fail
