There was room for more negotiation imo, so the massacre could've been prevented. What Konoha's mistake was that they went on with the massacre before giving diplomacy a chance to resolve matters including addressing the reasons for the uchiha clan's discontent.

Indeed the uchihas too were at fault but Hiruzen was willing to wait some more and the other's should've respected that. Maybe seeing Hiruzen's sincerity the uchiha would've come to the talking table eventually.

Still if Hiruzen wanted some more time to negotiate then he should've got that. I doubt he'd ask without having some hope that the uchihas would come around and he wouldn't risk giving more time to the uchiha to prepare for the coup if he didn't believe that there's some chance that the uchiha's could be convinced.
And I guess Shisui realized Danzo wanted nothing but the massacre to happen.

Izanami was introduced much later. So I'm not sure when Itachi learned to use it but he still awakened MS after Shisui's death only. If Shisui wanted to use his MS to make them change their mind or to force them to do what he wished controlling their actions (as suggest in the manga) it meant Uchihas had already rejected the talks by then. Yea, Danzou was a jealous and ambitious cruel schemer who forced Itachi's hand. But since he indirectly killed Shisui/stole his eye and Uchiha were not going to change their mind now that they couldn't be forced, that option is moot. Also Shisui couldn't use it for next 10 years once he was done. It was a temporary truce at best though I would agree that extra time could have both sides to rethink their choices.

It's like discussing if Titanic could be saved while sitting in a classroom, decades after it drowned. That was then. People did what they thought they had to, to minimize the damage. Some people on both sides made wrong choices.

I think you forgot the Uchiha weren't allowed to "clear" their name. The elders simply saw fit to segregate them and keep an eye on them rather than just talk. They seemed more interested in catching the Uchiha in an act, or forcing the hand of the Uchiha than actually finding out whether they were really guilty.

Itachi wasn't that smart.

He later regrets his actions. He knew later on, probably moments after the massacre that it was the dumbest move he had ever made. He saw that his move was so flawed that he even thought of telling Sasuke the whole truth if he could go back in time.
