It's easier when you're a genjutsu master and when you know what you're doing. Now, basic stuff. Tell me what a ninja is, what chakra is, ninjutsu and genjutsu.

Well a ninja is someone that is capable of using chakra to perform different types of ninjutsu right. Chakra is like an inner energy physical and spiritual that allows ninjas to perform techniques through ninjutsu. Ninjutsu are basically put any techniques that require ninjutsu.

Genjutsu is an illusionarytechnique casted upon someone. It doesnt effect the body, but the personeffected by it may think its reality and consequently feel like they are actuallyin that illusion. I also know that it disrupts chakra of the five senses.

The types of genjutsu I know of is sound genjutsu, and genjutsu casted withsight(sharingan).

To break out of a genjutsu the user can physically cause pain to himself asshikamaru did by breaking his finger. Sharingan users can see their owndisrupted chakra and determine they are in a genjutsu. Inputting chakra in theeffected person would break someone out of genjutsu Ex Kisame and his Samehada, and simply reasoning with yourself can help determine if you are in agenjutsu(watch your surroundings). A full body surge of chakra can breakgenjutsu by expelling the external chakra and a brief halt by stopping yourchakra flow could break a genjutsu.

So genjutsu falls under ninjutsu right since it requires chakra.

Well said. Those are the correct releasing methods although I have a few more words to say about that subject. But before that, here are Scorps' explanations of ninja, chakra and ninjutsu.

±± Ninja ±±
A ninja is someone who uses their full abilities in the service of his/hers beliefs, working to achieve a goal. This goal can be anything from peace to war, money, destruction, personal griefs or even revenge and can be shared with others or individual. Most ninjas are fighters and correspond to the bulk of the military force of the great nations. However, a ninja doesn't need to be a fighter. Even medics or a simple carpenter may, in times of need, use his abilities (medical knowledge or abilities in working with wood for example) to accomplish the goals he set to himself, following his beliefs.

±± Chakra ±±
Chakra is the energy that is formed through the passive combination of both the Physical and the Spiritual energies in a sentient being (every living being with a conscious mind has chakra). Physical energy corresponds to the vitality of the body and its own energy. Spiritual energy corresponds to the mind or spirit, and comes from the awareness and "soul" of each sentient being.

Some ninjas have high levels of chakra because they have great physical energy (like the Akimichi or even Tsunade) and others because of their spiritual energy (like the Uchiha and the Yamanaka). However, its much more difficult to increase the spiritual energy than the physical one, thus why all ninjas pass through intensive physical workout.

Yin and Yang are based on this same concept. Yin is the basis of the spirit while Yang the basis of the body. In this i won't go into more dept because there are 2 things to consider: Yin/Yang manipulation in our RP is different from the manga one and both are more or less inacessible.

Chakra flows in a circulatory system inside your body, in a way that much resembles the blood circulation. This circulatory system has 8 small reservoirs that act as both storage but also chakra regulation. These are the eight inner gates. Along your circulatory system, small "portals" exist that enable you to expell chakra from your body. These are called Tenketsu and there are 361 of them scattered allong the body. When a tenketsu opens, chakra poors out of it. Its by molding the chakra that comes out of the tenketsu that you produce ninjutsu and genjutsu.

±± Ninjutsu ±±
Ninjutsu, or Ninja Arts, is the ability to, through the use of chakra, accomplish tasks that would be otherwise impossible to do. Ninjutsu are done by 2 stepts: focusing your chakra and molding your chakra. Focusing is using your will power to "will" a portion of your chakra to do something. On the other hand, molding is giving your chakra a set of characteristics that will enable you to produce the desired end effect.

Think of the chakra flow as our breathing. Normally, it happens passively, without any conscious intervention. However, when you need to you can use your will to control it. Its the same with your chakra flow. Its happens normally without your consicious intervention. However, you can focus your chakra and make it produce something.

Now, molding the chakra is done by two basic principles: Shape Manipulation and Nature Transformation. These correspond to the two broad areas that one needs to change in the chakra to produce a jutsu. Shape manipulation pertains to the ability to give your chakra a desired form while Nature transformation pertains to the ability to give your chakra a desired set of characteristics/properties. Sometimes, to better mold chakra, ninja use Handseals. Handseals are simply hand gestures that allow the ninja to more easily concentrate and mold the chakra into the desired technique.
And here's an explanation about genjutsu.

±± Genjutsu ±±
Genjutsu, or Illusionary Arts, unlike ninjutsu, don't produce a real, palpable, feasible effect; it produces an illusionary effect. With a specific KG however, the illusions can become so strong that the body will be fooled into mimicking in real life the fake effects its perceiving through the illusion. There exists two types of Genjutsu: the passive, non chakra fueled ones (basically illusions to our senses like visual paradoxes and such which have little use in the RP and can be easily overcome through experience and logic) and the active, chakra fueled ones. Within the active chakra fueled ones two subtypes exist: Dojutsu induced Genjutsu and Normal Genjutsu.

Genjutsu works by using chakra to disturb the chakra flow of the opponent, specially in the brain, altering his senses. By doing this you can make him perceive any thing his senses are capable of: pain, heat, cold, tickles, iching, etc etc. A ninja can make the opponent taste, smell, feel, see or hear anything he wants. However, because this is done by using your chakra to manipulate his chakra flow, the ninja needs to be close or, many times, have direct eye contact or even physical contact. This is the main limitation of Genjutsu: range. The further you are away from your opponent, the harder it is to induce the fluctuation on his chakra flow to produce the genjutsu.

How exactly does it work? Well, every one has a balanced chakra flow. The chakra flows in a balanced combination of both physical and spiritual energies. The ratio between them vary from person to person (that is how each person has a different chakra signature) but its always calm and balanced. To produce a genjutsu, a ninja uses his chakra to disturb that balance in a controlled way. This is done in a similar way to ninjutsu, throught both focusing and molding chakra. A fluctuation is then created in the targets chakra "wave length" and makes it fluctuate in a given way. This produces the illusion by scrambling the users link between his Spirit and his Body which effectively is the link between his mind and his senses. To make your chakra be capable of doing the correct fluctuation, you need to use, most of the times, handseals. These help you mold and shape and focus your chakra to the correct wave length you want to induce, thus enabling you to use it to disturb the targets chakra flow.

Nope that covers alot and helps. Thanks.
Hmm, well then I have some for you. How long does a genjutsu last and can you cast a genjutsu on yourself? And since you mentioned genjutsu release I also have a detailed explanation about that too. :)

How to dispel a Genjutsu and why

Simple answer lies in what is a Genjutsu. Genjutsu is a disruption of your normal chakra flow that makes you experience an illusion as it scrambles your chakra. We have gone through that so you might ask how does this help?

Ok, if a Genjutsu is a disruption in your own chakra flow, to dispel it you need to create a stronger disruption that will clear that one and leave your chakra on its normal state. So basically, there is only one way to dispel genjutsu: disrupting your chakra flow.

Now, this can be done in 3 basic ways:

1- Altering the balance between physical and spiritual energies in your chakra by disturbing your physical energy. This is done by producing pain. Pain comes from the body and thus it makes your physical energy fluctuate. Because of this fluctuation your chakra flow experiences a spike. This spike is a disturbance that will dispel other disturbances present in your chakra.

2- Altering the balance between physical and spiritual energies in your chakra by disturbing your spiritual energy. This is done by your sheer will power. Its done by forcefully creating a surge of chakra in your body by spiking your spiritual energy. It can be done in 2 ways: through a technique named Kai and through other techniques, like Nagashi, that will produce a high enough surge of chakra through your body.

3- Altering your chakra flow through the introduction of foreign chakra. This can be done by an ally or by entering for example, sage mode or being a jinchuriki. The truth is that as foreign chakra enters your system or another energy (natural energy), your chakra flow becomes altered and thus releases from the genjutsu.

All of these produce a reset-like effect on your chakra flow, making it return to normal.

hmm a genjutsu lasts as long as the user keeps it active (of course if he is out of chakra it wont last) or until the person under the genjutsu breaks it. You can get caught in your own genjutsu. Im not sure but I think someone brought up that part of the reason kakashi keeps one eye closed is that he might get caught in his own illusion since he only has one sharingan.

Yes, it lasts as long as you keep it active. In other words until it fulfills its purpose. If a genjutsu description says that the opponent sees a crow flying at him and poking his eye out then it will last until the crow pokes the opponents eye in the illusion. However, if the opponent manages to deduce it's an illusion he may as well stop it before, by dispelling it.

Not what I asked. I asked can you specifically cast an illusion to target only yourself and fool your own brain. I'm unsure about the Kakashi reference, because I doubt that you can get caught in an illusion that you cast upon your opponent. Anyway, the answer is yes, but with some limitations. As you are the one creating the genjutsu you can't actually fool your brain completely so the applications are limited. Unless the genjutsu is designed to be self-induced then it won't work. But you can create self-inducing genjutsu. Making them logical and possible is quite a different other story.

Yes Ryujin sensei said you can layer a genjutsu by effecting more than one of the senses such as sight and hearing. o break out of this layered genjutsu you break out of the stronger of the two

Yes, that's the core of it. When you layer genjutsu you affect more senses and by doing so, it should make the illusion more realistic. However, it's not always easy to do this because most opponents will quickly notice the first illusion and try to break it, so it's a very unused concept in our RP. However, as long as it exists some use it. Now, let's get a bit technical about it.

Genjutsu Layering Casting:

This stands as the ability that the user and/or allies have of casting more than one non-conflicting genjutsu onto the same target, mixing illusions or deepening them. Any non-conflicting Genjutsu can be layered with another, as long as the highest ranked genjutsu is used first, and the lower ones afterwards, as if filling the gaps of the illusion. If an higher ranked genjutsu is used afterwards, it will overule the initial technique and break it. The user may stack up to 2 illusions together.

Ex: Genjutsu A - Creates Butterflies, A ranked.
Genjutsu B - Creates Squirrels, B ranked.

A + B = Butterflies AND Squirrels
B + A = Butterflies NO Squirrels

When releasing from Layered Genjutsus, the target must perform counter sufficient for the highest rank genjutsu of the "combo", thus countering all at the same time. Likewise, the target can individually break each layered genjutsu by using lower ranked genjutsu methods, but in essence its a less effective method. If 2 genjutsus of the same rank are used in the layering process, one needs only to use a release method capable of releasing either one or the other, and both are released. In combinations of Genjutsu, the rank of the combination is the rank of the highest genjutsu used.

Ex: Genjutsu A - Creates Butterflies, A ranked.
Genjutsu B - Creates Squirrels, B ranked.
Genjutsu C - Creates Birds, B ranked.

B + C or C + B = Squirrels AND Birds, combined B rank Genjutsu
A + B = Butterflies AND Squirrels, combined A-Rank Genjutsu
C + A = Butterflies NO Birds, A-Rank

If the Genjutsu are conflicting, then the highest ranked Genjutsu will always prevail over the other one, disrupting it and assuming it's place. If they're both the same rank, both are neutralized and the ilusions end.

Note: Layering two Genjutsu doesn't mean one escapes the normal rules of Time Frame. Casting 2 Genjutsu on a target takes the time needed to perform two moves of the time frame and cannot be done in a way that the target hasn't time to counter the first illusion if he is capable of doing so.

Oh ok I got it.
Alright then. I believe that covers the basic parts. Now about the illusions themselves. There are visual, audio, restricting and all sorts of combined illusions. The visual obviously affect the opponents vision and change the image he sees. It makes the sky turn blue and stuff like that. The audio make him either hear or mask sounds of incoming objects and such, however these are rare because most of them requires Sound release to be submitted as customs. I have a few of these in my inventory. Then there are the most popular ones, the restricting illusions where your opponent sees or feels something which prevents him from moving in reality. Basically, everything what happens in the illusion doesn't relate to reality because it's just an illusion in the opponents mind. However, the restricting illusions work in a way that it does relate to reality. So, if you were to be caught in a restricting genjutsu that is B ranked, how would you after realizing that it's a genjutsu, dispel it?

I would probably use a technique that requires a full body surge of chakra equal in rank. This would dispel the disrupted chakra.
Wrong. You need one rank higher chakra surge to release you from genjutsu. Nagashi would work very well against this kind of illusions. And how would you release against a powerful (A rank) and gruesome audiovisual illusion where you see and hear your dead relatives, being resurrected into zombies and screaming for help?

If I inflict pain on myself I could break out of that. It would have to be far more powerful than a kunai to the thigh since it is an A rank. At the same time I have to make sure I don't kill myself. A deep gash in the stomach seems like it would work.

lol, and then what? Wait till you bleed out? No, that's too much. A stab into a muscle would work very well. If you could break your little finger like Shikamaru did, it would be even better. Here are the pain levels and actions that represent them.

D Rank Genjutsu: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
C Rank Genjutsu: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
B Rank Genjutsu: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
A Rank Genjutsu: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
S Rank Genjutsu: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
