imo the best written characters would be nagato obito and gaara...sorry i didnt go with the thread i.e 5 buh this three characters background story actually dhu beat all d others....the other day i was explaining d whole naruto series to my girl n i swear tears dropped from my eye when i reached nagato...super dynamic character,he is very much connected to every character in a way,shares the same master with the main protagonist,had a really shitty background...aside from getting the reningan for free,i can say he worked to earn all his villian ryt(badass)..he had a really shitty childhood,had his parents killed by the goodguys,lived in isolation with yahiko and konan until jiraiya helped and trained them....lost yahiko to a silly dispute... i just love his character and his craving for peace(despite his means)..killed his own master without remorse....enjoyed his very final dispute with naruto during d pein arc...his originality......then obito is rated no2 because he was used by madara even after everyone considered him the very worst villian........i dont know y no one is listing naruto tho...the guy has a pretty good background tale,despite being protected by plot,,he really worked hard for everything he has...really an interesting free spirited character....
and then the worst character i think there is is sasuke...call me a sasuke hater buh i think he has a pretty messed up story...dont get me wrong,aside from the uchiha massacre and to keep naruto busy chasing after sth,i dont think he has a reason to be on this manga...so arrogant and confused...one day he wants to kill itachi,d next day he wants to destroy d leaf village and d next day he wants to be hokage.....so damn freaking fake of a character...

No Choji is there because every manga usually has one fat character and he is just a character to fill that hole nothing else.

That's why he's so great. He was introduced as the fat comedy relief character who everyone found a bit annoying. But the bravery/badassery he showed in the Jirobo fight and the sad bullying flashback makes the audience feel genuinely guilty for dismissing this lovely character as the 'comedy relief fat guy' and start taking him seriously whilst realising that he actually might die.

And he continues to be awesome in Shippuden in the Shinobi War against Asuma, Kakazu and Hiashi.
