Top 5 best writter characters.

1) Itachi(A saint shrouded in Darkness)
2) Kabuto/Kimmimaru (Wanted to feel a void or have a sense of purpose)
3) Sasuke (Obtained Power through being fueled by Vengeance
4) Obito (Shows us how the world can change any one from being really caring to cold hearted)
5) Neji Hyuuga (a Character driven by fighting ones own destiny)

Honorable mentions: Danzo, Hiruzen, Lee, Killer Bee, Nagato

Keep in mind this has nothing to do with my personal favorite characters. Just characters I feel Kishi put a lot of time developing in terms of back story and how there story matches there actions.

If it was a list just based on Part 1, then Neji would have to be there

Itachi/Sasuke/Obito (Despite my dislike of the Uchiha these particular Uchiha have the darkest and most "ninja" like background which makes their history and story interesting)
Nagato(Reminds me a lot of Magneto)
Zabuza/Haku(Ninjas to the very end)
The Legendary Sannin(though they don't take center stage they have been an intrigal part of the series since part I. And their abilities, to me at least are all powers they worked for, experimented for, or created themselves showing that you don't have to belong to the Uzumaki, Senju, Uchiha lineage to be legendary (Tsunade being the exception)...)
Gaara He is one of my favorite characters so I may be a little biased, but to watch him grow from maniacle killer to tempered Kazekage was/is moving for me.)

honestly I feel like none of those characters are actually well written. I don't feel like they have to much depth to them. very one dimensional. If I had to say the best written characters in this manga are they would have to be jiraiya, Tsunade, and zabuza. but as entertaining as naruto is it doesn't really spark any emotions for me. I don't feel anything towards any of the characters. I never truly feel emersed into the story. Its always just my curiosity that brings me back to see what happened

This^ Though I have placed my top 5 preferences none of them really spark an emotion from me. I don't really feel fearful, or worried, or happy for any of the characters in the NV. It is amusing to read and entertaining to watch. The story is just good enough to keep my interest all these years so it's not the worst written piece of literature, but definately not award winning material either.

Your threads are radically improving. I'd also put Chouji and Tsunade up there too but people tend to not acknowledge them because they're not very 'cool' characters. Deidara, Kakazu and Hidan are also very well written villains, even if they aren't all that complex- they're written to be fun and threatening and they totally are.

OT: Yea, I agree. I think madara's starting to look like a really well developed character also. If you read back over his parts of the manga and really analyse it, it's kind of deep.

itachi didn't want revenge, unlike sasuke.

Naruto and Gaara are definitely honorable mention at least. They were criticized and despised for being a Jinchuuriki. That was something they had no control over and the struggles that came with it were the demise of others where they fought for respect and touched the lives of many.
