Ok I won't put my personal favorites, I'll put the movies that are considered histories greatest through professional ratings, not fan ratings, but actual film-making ratings.
Note: However film-making ratings are not taken into account how entertaining the film is, but how well they are MADE. This list is in no particular order.
1) The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Has the highest rating on more than one site including IMDB and Filmcrave. It holds a high score among the community as well as film-makers.
2) The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) - Regarded as a pure masterpiece, this movie won 11 Academy Awards and is known to be one of the most popular movies of this generation. It was voted the best movie of all time by Yahoo movies and Movies.com's annual reader's poll in 2006 and 2007.
3) Casablanca (1942) - Known to have the best screenplay ever written in Hollywood.
4) Citizen Kane (1941) - The most studied film in all of film history.
5) Seven Samurai (1954) - One of the most influential film among film-makers.
6) The Godfather (1972) - It holds the number 1 spot on the Top 200 at Everyone's a Critic, and the number 2 spot on the IMDb list. For many years it was regarded as one of greatest movies of all time.
7) The Lion King (1994) - Was chosen as the best animated film for Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time. This animation was produced in over 30 languages and dialects world wide when released.
8) Gone with the Wind (1939) - This movie was also picked as the best film for Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time.
9) Star Wars (1977) - The only film not ranked extremely high on how well it was made, but known to be the most popular film in the world.
10) Akira (1988) - is considered a landmark film in animation and film in general and became a hugely popular cult film since its initial release. It is often cited as one of a handful of Japanese animated films that helped find Japanese animation's popularity outside of Japan.
The list can go on, but since it's only 10 I'll stop here. I picked the 10 greatest with regards to, most well known, most influential and best made films, although there are others that should be on the list as well.
A small note - Ben-Hur and Titanic were the only films to ever win 11 Academy Awards along side The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. No film has ever won 12.
