Sorry, this one is too hard to list for me. There are too many great movies. Obviously, I haven't seen all and not all my favorites can be classified as best movies.

1st: The Matrix; this is just a personal favorite and I only place it there because of its "importance" in my life. I can't count how many times I've watched it when I was young. It oppened my mind to the idea that there is always more and that reality is always more complexe then it seems. It inspired me to read great novels and authors such as "1984" and "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, Albert Camus, Fyodor Dostoyevsky...etc. In itself it was a great movie, though it wouldn't earn the first place if it wasn't for the reasons I just mentionned.
2nd: The Star Wars saga; when you talk about Star Wars, I'm there. I guess I'm just a big geek, but I don't mind, Star Wars is awesome. Such a detailed and vast universe (Caliburn could surely say the same thing about Lord of the Rings lol) with an incredible story. Like any true fan (I believe), I'll have to go with the first trilogy, but that doesn't mean the second was bad. Both have their strength and weaknesses but the first saga just came out so strong that it was impossible for Lucas to do it again (though he did came close with Episode III).
8th: V for Vendetta; There is no need for introduction when talking about V for Vendetta. Simply said, this film was fantastic! Hugo Weaving (a greatly underated actor) was brilliant in his role. The subtle inflection in his voice, his charismatic presence and his incredible acting abilities made him the perfect choice for V (you really need to consider that it takes great acting to convey an emotion when we can't see your face. Earl Jones was the original master and here we can see that Hugo has no reason to be envious (is it the deep voice?)). Now, let's not forget that the plot and story were also very well written. The whole movie revolve in a universe that could be described as an intermediate between our world and the one shown in the book/movie 1984 (by Orwell). I won't spoil anything for you, but if you're looking for a film rich in action scenes while still having a strong political message in the background, V for Vendetta is a must see for you.
*Note: This movie was also written and partly directed by the Wachowsky brother's, the same that did The Matrix. You can see I'm kind of a fan of their movies .
9th: Night of the Living Dead; this may come as a surprise for a top 10 of all times movies, but since it's impossible to have a unanimous decision, I figured I'd just go for my top 10. Night of the Living Dead is a very powerful movie that conveys a strong anti-racism message and was, for all intended purposes, the first of it's kind. It was very low budget film, but it still managed to make the most of it (pig organs were used because they were cheaper then fake ones). George A. Romero really made an increadible work with this one and would set most of the common Zombie stereotypes which are used in todays films. I could go on and on about this film, but I think it'll just be easier for you to watch it and then read on the genre if you liked it ^^.
10th: Modern Times; There are som many great movies I'd like to talk about but since there's only 10 spots, here's my last choice. Now this is both a tribute to the movie and the man behind it. Modern Times was visually beautiful and innovative. Chaplin often manage to make us burst out laughing without having to say a single word, while other times, we simply can't help but hold our breath as he's performing incredible stunts (yes he was performing his own stunts). Just to give you a little idea of what I mean; at some point, he's on rollerskates, backward, with both his eyes covered, and all of this in an old building where he could have fall 3 floors down if he made a wrong move...Truly impressive. The film as a whole is very good, but you're really watching it for Chaplin (as most of his films). On a side note, and to elaborate on why I find him so incredible, he directed and wrote almost all of his films while playing in them.
On topic cannot say there are awesome movies in different languages all over the world which we dont get a chance to see and therefore watching a handful of them does not let us judge over the entire lot of them.....it is an insult that way...
though i can always give a list of my personal favourites that is more apt question.
1. I'm making my choice on movies I've watched.
2. It's random order
3. I'm suggesting movies on its different genres. I'm someone who's for diversity and creativity.
