Yea I know it's awesome, but you should read the Manga, the second season of the Anime is following a different route than the Manga, so might as well check both out.
Even if you generally don't like reading Manga, Tokyo Ghoul will be worth a shot!

I don't like modern time based manga/anime. But Tokyo Ghoul became quite popular, should I try it ?

Yes, definitely. I had the same doubts as you before, but TG really changed my mind, it's awesome. (Y)

The first half of Tokyo Ghoul is excellent. A lot of focus on the conflict that arises from a race of people, not monsters, existing who have to eat humans to survive. That's what the focus is on, and the protagonist allows for some insight into both the ghoul and human worlds. It's really interesting stuff for a while. The second half is... not as good. It's not terrible, but comparatively it doesn't hold up. All the themes of the first half are abandoned, most of the ghouls are essentially monsters as opposed to the people seen in the first half, and it devolves into a typically fighting manga. Not necessarily bad, but reading it decline was painful, especially since the first half was so incredible. Still, I highly recommend it, if only for the first half.

The sequel has just barely started and most people like it. Ok it's not dark and edgy like the first part but we 'll get there, right now we are through our protagonist's "happy" period.

I'm not talking about the sequel manga, I'm separating the first one between the first part, before Kaneki's torture, to after that. I haven't been catching up with the new manga, but it might very well have improved. I actually want less dark and edgy, more like what it was like before Kaneki's hair turned white.

Yeah it's call going forward with the story, it can't keep going with the Ghoul vs humans concept when the story has more to it. It's nothing like you're looking for, this doesn't seem to be the series for you tho.

Going forward with the story is different from completely switching things around. I'm not looking for humans vs ghouls, I'm looking for the exact opposite. What made the series unique for me is the way they showed how human the ghouls are, and the question of whether or not ghouls can coexist with humans. That's the exact opposite of humans vs ghouls, which is essentially what the series became... and that's fine. I mean, like I said, it's not necessarily bad that it changed, but it did, indeed, become something that isn't really a series for me. It's cool if you and others continue to be really into it, though! I'm just not as big on it anymore. I'll probably pick up the sequel manga eventually for closure's sake.

This is yet another manga elitist who is trying too hard to make the anime look worse than it was in fact. Oh, how annoying they are...

@OP: I do not mean to say that you should not read the manga, it's certainly above the anime, but that does not mean you should just quit watching the anime. If anything, I'd just keep both reading and watching (Which I actually am). A tip: Never listen to any manga elitist, whatever the series may be. Most of them have 10x bigger egos than anime only watchers, just because "I read the canon story" bullshit.

The second season isn't bad at all actually. My only concern is how they will manage to wrap it all up in so few chapters.

I have to disagree with you calling him a manga elitist

The anime is good, but the manga is great and a much more pleasurable experience

I guess I should have bolded the 'it's certainly above the anime'. I obviously acknowledge the superiority of the manga. However, when you tell someone who has clearly stated that he genuinely enjoyed the anime that he is wasting time, you know you are an elitist.
