The first half of Tokyo Ghoul is excellent. A lot of focus on the conflict that arises from a race of people, not monsters, existing who have to eat humans to survive. That's what the focus is on, and the protagonist allows for some insight into both the ghoul and human worlds. It's really interesting stuff for a while. The second half is... not as good. It's not terrible, but comparatively it doesn't hold up. All the themes of the first half are abandoned, most of the ghouls are essentially monsters as opposed to the people seen in the first half, and it devolves into a typically fighting manga. Not necessarily bad, but reading it decline was painful, especially since the first half was so incredible. Still, I highly recommend it, if only for the first half.
