Doton/Earth Release is one of the basic five elements . It allows the user to manipulate the surrounding of the ground , as well as to use it for offensive attack , or defensive purposes. Doton is the most versatile ability of basic five . By making it soft as clay , it allows the user to travel underground for transportation purposes , or setting up traps/bombs for the enemy . Doton affinities are the most common amongst Iwagakure shinobi.
