You would think that people would appreciate him for being a different kind of character, look at the remaining Hokages (bar Tsunade, i'm not a tsunade ''hater'' btw) and you will see that they all follow mostly the same pattern.

Hashirama the loving Hokage, kind, gentle yet powerful, cared for everyone, god of shinobi bla bla bla, Hiruzen loving old father, god of shinobi during his ''prime'', wise, gentle and powerful, shared the ''will of fire'', yadi yadi yada. Minato is not any different, strong, gentle, loving, savior of Konoha, lovable yadi yadi yada.

Wouldn't it be extremely BORING if ALL the Hokages were portrayed this same way?. ''Gary Stu's'' of some sort, Tobirama is not the best of guys in Naruto, but he isn't the worst of guys either. He is a different kind of Hokage, not as ''loving'' as the rest, not as ''idealistic'' as the rest, has lots of flaws, but a good Hokage nonetheless. Heck I think he's a breath of fresh air in comparison to the rest of the Hokages.

But people don't consider it this way, they think he's an *******, hate on him and what not, why?, because he's not ''loving'' and ''kind'' like the remaining Hokages?. I think the character got the wrong kind of reactions from readers, not what Kishi intended

Maybe it's the fact that he's indirectly responsible for everything that is happening and was the worst Hokage in history. Just a guess.

The other three aren't Gary Stus. They have their flaws too.

Hashirama is idealistic, but also carefree minded like Naruto and not as bright as Tobirama. He also subjugated the bijuus rather than harmonizing with them.

Hiruzen couldn't stomach the darker aspects and decisions of a leader like Tobirama so he left them to Danzo, who went out of control with them. He also could not kill Orochimaru being that he thought of him as his son and blamed himself for what happened to him. Furthermore, he couldn't save the Uchiha or keep Sasuke from leaving.

Minato sacrificed himself and Naruto's childhood to secure the village's power, couldn't realize Tobi was Obito, couldn't save Kushina, couldn't save Obito and couldn't save Rin.

Sorry, Tsunade isn't barred lols. She became Hokage like all the others. She's strong, protected the village, that's her face on the cliff like all the others, the whole village supports her, she rejected Orochimaru and routed him, avenging Hiruzen, she created the medical shinobi and strengthened Sakura and so on. She however is also not without her flaws. She favored Naruto's wishes and continued to let him leave the village. This gave him freedom, however at the same time, it risked his life and the village's power being that the Akatsuki were after the Jinchuriki. Ironically however, in the end, this action allowed him to become stronger and hid him from pain. Another flaw would be allowing Jiraiya to go to Amegakure alone where he was outmatched and killed. Third would be her earlier apathy of Konoha, though she greatly made up for it by nearly sacrificing her life several times to protect it.

The hate for Tobirama stems from he killing Izuna and "subjugating" the Uchiha, but I honestly really don't condemn him for such actions. He made it clear they were adopting Madara's ideals, becoming antagonistic towards the village and that he knew the sharingan inside and out. All of these were justified being that the Uchiha do lose control when their sharingans grow in power, not to mention the fact that Black zetsu was manipulating them.

In regards to that, "He started the whole war because he killed Izuna!" tripe, it's pure garbage. Six adult Uchiha brutally murdered his own "kid" brother and it is implied Madara killed his own friend like many other Uchiha just to strengthen his eyes. Further on, it wasn't just Izuna's death, but a number of other things that influenced Madara. Black Zetsu and his forbidden writings on the Uchiha stone, which instilled fear and ambition, all his other brothers dying throughout his childhood during wartime, his sharingan influencing his emotions, his jealousy of Hashirama and so on.

The things I do condemn him for are in part Edo Tensei, since it requires human sacrifice and preserving Madara's body. I'm sure he may have used prisoners of war or criminals for the former, though in many circles that would still be immoral. However, I think he went a bit too far with preserving Madara. That was almost Danzo level deceit and he let his fear get the better of him.

Madara was able to survive and start Akatsuki and the war as a result, however, Tobirama makes up for it by being Hiruzen's sensei and making him the golden age Hokage.

Tobirama is the most amusing hokage IMO, and if I could base this show around any character it would be him.
It'd be like some death note shiz(Never saw it, I assumed it was mysteries after mysteries)
But on another note he actually can be blamed for a ton of the problems being faced today in the world of naruto manga, lel.

but none of the other 3 would be considered a ''douchebag'', which is the reason I think ppl dislike Tobirama, he's not a ''good'' guy like the rest of the Hokages
