You would think that people would appreciate him for being a different kind of character, look at the remaining Hokages (bar Tsunade, i'm not a tsunade ''hater'' btw) and you will see that they all follow mostly the same pattern.
Hashirama the loving Hokage, kind, gentle yet powerful, cared for everyone, god of shinobi bla bla bla, Hiruzen loving old father, god of shinobi during his ''prime'', wise, gentle and powerful, shared the ''will of fire'', yadi yadi yada. Minato is not any different, strong, gentle, loving, savior of Konoha, lovable yadi yadi yada.
Wouldn't it be extremely BORING if ALL the Hokages were portrayed this same way?. ''Gary Stu's'' of some sort, Tobirama is not the best of guys in Naruto, but he isn't the worst of guys either. He is a different kind of Hokage, not as ''loving'' as the rest, not as ''idealistic'' as the rest, has lots of flaws, but a good Hokage nonetheless. Heck I think he's a breath of fresh air in comparison to the rest of the Hokages.
But people don't consider it this way, they think he's an *******, hate on him and what not, why?, because he's not ''loving'' and ''kind'' like the remaining Hokages?. I think the character got the wrong kind of reactions from readers, not what Kishi intended
