You don't need to have knowledge on Edo Tensei to have free will (unless you escape it using 'Release'), it was the fact Tobirama was able to have free will due to extraordinary chakra reserves and overpower the restraints; Tobi purposely says that bringing them back to life with almost full power was a mistake for Orochimaru. This is the reason why the restraints don't work on Hashirama cause his reserves > Tobirama's. The only reason why Orochimaru can control Tobi is due to Oro using Hashi's cells to strengthen the restraint.
