If Tobi is from that era then I believe Tobi to be the older son of the sage and not the sage himself. Think about it Tobi said his a shell of his former shelf and we know that the older son and younger son of the sage fought each other and maybe the older bro is still suffering from that defeat both physically and mentally.

If he was the sage himself then why did he lose all of his power in the first place. Ever since Tobi existed he as been using people to get what he wants, he used and probably manipulated Madara into fighting the first Hokage then he used Nagato and now finally his using Sasuke

No bro it's not stupid at all. in fact, i was JUST about to make this very same thread but i saw u just put it up. it really could be the Sage. i mean, he knows everything about everything. and, it also would make sense that someone who's been alive for like 200 years and saw nothing but war despite all attempts at stopping it comes to the onerous conclusion that "there is nothing but despair" and as a man revered as a God it could be up to him to take over.
Then again, it could just be some random dude and now--when his face is finally shown--we'll get a brand new history lesson about the Narutoverse from this guy, his clan, and his situation/position in history. But it makes me wonder, since Madara knows about the Ifinite Tsukiyomi, but he died, and Tobi also is planning on the Infinite Tsukiyomi, who's idea was it? Tobi's or Madara's?

great input and theories so far but i need a spot more background before i give in to this one just yet. If he has in fact been alive for a couple hundred years as so6p, whats stopped him from snagging all the tailed beasts and completing his plans from there? Granted if the theory is correct kishi would come up with a subtle backstory showing him as too weak to do anything. but until that point im wondering, why didnt he just grab them and take over the world before (arguably) the strongest total group of ninja grew into maturaty?

1)He was there when it happened/present at the time.
2)He believes in the SO6p like the chinese do in Buddah
3)He Knows ALL the info on the Uchiha stone + more. (which is only possible if u have the S, MS, EMS and R in ur possession)

Tobi is a shell of his former self.
Now we all know that Tobi is a shell of his FORMER self, now what does he need to once again b his former "self"?

1) the Juubi (collected 80% of bijuu to ressurect the juubi)
2) the 5 treasures. (100% collected)

Now the only "Person" known to have all these at once was the Sage of six paths. The So6p was practically the "ruler of the known world" and it was in "peace" until he "died" as tobi said...which i doubt.

tobi took just two of the treasures, the sealing gourd and the amber pot, which contained kin and gin. he ignored the rest, the cursing sword, the banana palm fan and that rope thing

In the latest manga Tobi say's 'I'm no one, I don't want to be anyone'.

Maybe he's telling the truth and he really isn't anyone because he's the 10 tails.

Personally I think Tobi is going to end up being Madara in another body which is why he was scared when seeing his old body......

Tobi former self could be referring to the fact that he lost power after the battle with his younger brother.
