he gave his "eye" to his youngest son and his body to his eldest..
but he himself was never said to of died.
who else would want to "purify" the world that "he remembers"
tobi wants to combine all the tails right?
back to the original 10 tails
there is only ONE PERSON that can control it and thats the sage.....
hes just a shadow of his former self
to give his body...might mean he has no way of doing jutsus.
why else manipulate all the shinobi that are doing things that HE could once do.

Well my guess is that he's the revived brother of Madara (who Madara revived) and is under an eternal genjutsu created by the real Madara to revive the real Madara using the Rinnegan so that Madara can rule with the eye of the moon plan!

And yes I just put this thought together about a minute ago so it probably doesn't hold much water

Yes I believe that Madara split himself into Tobi and Zetsu to live longer and get all the tailed beasts and become complete again. Technically he is dead, but has transferred his ideals onto inferior bodies, but hopes to become complete once again.
