Even today ninjas use kunais and swords. It's the main characters that we see using so much OP jutsu. Even during the Kakashi gaiden arc, we saw many Ninjas using Kunais and swords. And besides it was an era of constant war, they weren't push overs.

You are assuming that Modern nin>Previous nins because of ninjutsu, when that iis not necessarily the truth. Some people use no ninjutsu at all and can beat many who rely mainly on ninjutsu.

Key word being some in your statement. which is what I am trying to get you to understand. There will always be those that stand above others however, as an overall assumption modern shinobi would wreck the past ones.
