Don't get me wrong it's a great way for story progression but we're more that half way through the grand line and this is the first time we've seen an awakening? I'm trying to think of all of the other df awakenings like robins. What does she turn an entire building into a hand? I just feel like there are too many df that this couldn't apply to and that creates continuities

We've already seen awakenings back in Impel Down. Also, everyone has a different awakening so just because DD turns everything around him to strings doesn't mean that Luffy turns everything to rubber or Robin everything to hands.

the whole "awakened DF" thing remindes me of Shikai and Bankai a lot

As the fine gentleman above used the bankai analogy remember not everyone can and will achieve this level of mastery, so those most probable non applicable df's will just make multitudes list of regular df use users while the more important charecters get to showcase the nxt lvl.

Why are people getting into a strop over this? It's not as if now every single person with a df will awaken it. Stop hating on something based on your own thoughtless presumptions. The ability has hardly been elaborated on and already everyone hates it because "bs and plotholes".
