A very solid case can be made for Gaara, which is why I said "arguably" for Haku. Both fathers tried to kill them, both were unwanted and alone. It can go either way, my bias picks Haku. Gaara, is a very close second.

Honestly, if he has all those things and he's so amazing as you say, why is he dead? Why did he let himself die, instead of countering Kakashi? Why didn't he just completely kill off Naruto and Sasuke when he had the chance? I can get why he didn't kill Naruto, since he gained that attachment to him. But I haven't seen anything from him truly that shows how truly amazing he is.

I mean Kakashi has seen his father commit suicide, the death of his two best friends (one by his own hands), and many, many other people/friends throughout a war. Sasuke saw the entire annihilation of his clan by the hands of his own brother. People attempted to kill Gaara many times, with his own father detesting him. And Itachi was the one having to kill his entire clan, then leave his village and live out the rest of his days as an S-rank criminal. Naruto had the nine-tailed fox in him so he was detested by the entire village almost his entire life. Literally no one liked him minus Iruka and the Third Hokage. So I'm easily going to disagree on Haku having the most tragic back story.

As for the observation/countering part, MANY ninja have been shown to have that attribute. Sasuke, Kakashi, Itachi, Nagato, and hell, even Naruto at this point. It's really not that special.

And again, with battle IQ, that's been shown by MANY characters. I'll give it that Haku is very, very skilled, but nothing that isn't really known by a good number of Chunnin level ninja.

I like Haku and admit that he is highly gifted and smart, but that's about it. Especially since he was a foe early on in the series where Kishi had to make things seem really out there and tough as far as the opponents went. Hell, Zabuza was shown to be this INSANELY strong foe, on of the most top-notch ninjas around. But since then we've seen more and more skilled enemies who are significantly better than him.

So I can't completely agree that Haku is the smartest there is. I'd probably, like almost everyone else, go with Shikamaru, his dad, and/or Itachi. Nonetheless, it's all just opinions and good OP. Not gonna flame you especially since I respect you for your admiration for Haku, despite all the shit you may get.

Idk about that you make some good points though. Smartest so far it is Madara I mean he planed all this whole series out literal to come back from death. He tricked Hashi Senju into thinking he was dead and unlocked Rinnegon he manipulated Obito into starting the war for him I mean I personally don't like Madara but by far he is the Smartest ninja.

Nice thread, it must have taken quite a bit of time to put together. Kudos for that, people like you that put up threads like this are the reason I joined, so thankyou for the eye opener.

I agree that his deceptive appearance at first was very smart, he appears picking herbs and seeming as rudimentary as a farmer, and pretending not to realize Naruto is a ninja, these are the clever techniques of a spy.

Just by observing Haku can see a way to counter a technique? That is very smart, I agree! Some people are fooled into thinking only the "last man standing" like Naruto or Madara are the truly strong ones, but this is not so, due to other factors which I'm about to mention. Thank you for reminding us all.

All in all by reading this I get the feeling that Haku is indeed a very sad character, but what is sad isn't just his back story (which sadly, I've taken to be fairly standard history to most Ninja) , it's he fact that doesn't believe in himself at all, and allows himself to be Zabuza's tool.
That is not a question of his intelligence, that is there to show his lack of self belief/self-esteem. Which is seemingly rock bottom, and I feel for any character in the manga that is suffering for a world of ninjutsu, a world that shouldn't exist.

One final off topic thought: If "Madara" or Madara was manipulating the Hidden Mist Village, was he responsible for the "killing to find the strongest" at schools that caused Zabuza to become the way he is, and was he sent by either Madara to attack the leaf? Another intersting point to note that hasn't been covered in the manga as far as I know.
