I'm sure he is aware of what his team and organization stands for better than anyone outside of his employment does. I don't know if they were expecting him to have a lab robe when doing the interview but he could've easily received the same criticism about any shirt or outfit he chose to wear. There was nothing wrong with his particular choice of clothing and the group that responded can't really complain about him objectifying women when a woman gave that to him and probably encouraged him to wear it. I can understand why this happened but I don't like it one bit, we all know no one would even bring up the topic if he had worn a blue shirt with male superheroes.

"A woman gave to him"-- well if she asked him to wear it on his big day then neither of the couple have much of a fashion sense.

And

Whether he intended to spark controversy remains open-ended. It’s worth adding that he is also covered in tattoos, including one featuring the Rosetta spacecraft, and that earlier this year the space agency asked him to cover his arms at a media event. Perhaps he wanted to shock us, or maybe he was just sticking two fingers up to his bosses. If so, the day your team successfully completes a 10-year, 6bn kilometre mission to land on a comet is probably the day to do it.

That was interesting- he was asked to cover his tattooed arms last time and this time it's not just the tattoos but that shirt...

And as I already said the real problem here is people not identifying the problem with such a shirt. But whatever carry on. People do not get that particular problem till a female from their own family about who may care personally ends up in that situation.

I'm sorry, but your argument is invalid.

First off, you should not assume what had happened, "woman gave that to him and probably encouraged him to wear it" and even if that did happen, it is up to him to make the decision. He realised what he had done may have offended people, thus apologised for it.

You are contradicting yourself in these points you have made.

In the end, he should have respected that he was on an international stream, viewed by many worldwide. It is not certain that it would not have been offensive in the "western culture" (as commented before) but other cultures are involved who may see things differently.

People in the world have many views. Even though you may not agree with them, you should respect them. He is free to wear that shirt whenever he wants but when he will be viewed by many who could find it offensive (even as little as a person), I would not recommend it.

You would be surprised what is considered okay for some cultures and not okay for others. People don't have the obligation to please every puritan hypocrite on the world or every person who thinks that they should all follow their country's politically correct behavior.

Btw if it is true that a woman asked him to wear this then lol it must really mean something important for those two or else they have some edgy fashion taste.

Their countries? Are you telling me it it's only people from abroad who pointed the problem out and British were fine with it?

It was said that his friend gave him that shirt as birthday present. It didn't say anywhere that she asked him to wear it on camera.

Way to nitpick and twist what I say, the fact is people could objectively criticise him about any shirt he chose to wear but specifically gave him shit for wearing this particular shirt. It's also a well known fact that feminists live by double standards and wouldn't care if he had a blue shirt with male superheroes instead a pink shirt with female ones with guns. They'll take anything they can latch on to reinforce their victim mindset.

Well then imagine if the guy just wore this shirt to show that he dedicates the achievement to her too, and then he gets this shitstorm on his face for his "sweet" move. That would suck no?

Btw I really like how everyone noticed the latex clad women and complained but no one says anything about the guns? Like is it okay for guns to be "promoted" this way but it's the onjectification of women being "promoted" this way that is the worst? Except if wait, the shirt means nothing because it's just a shirt showing a superhero a woman imagined and made this shirt of.

You are correct in the sense that you do not have an obligation to please everyone.

Although when you work for the European Space Agency (which has a collection of countries involved - 20 member states) and the space program is streamed internationally, it should be your aim to respect everyone. That will show you actually respect where you work and who you represent.

Sure I agree, the shirt was not appropriate for the occasion.

How you laid out this point is now agreeable. Yes it could be seen that a male superhero would be ignored whilst a female one would raise eyebrows.

Although as stated before, this is an international stream. Respect still has to be shown even though you may not agree with what others think because you represent a large agency.

The girl in question is his friend's wife.. just in case there is a misunderstanding.

lol But seriously but for the polarization and counter attacks it wouldn't have been this big a deal. I haven't even heard of it till I read this thread. We are discussing it simply because this topic generates more passion and responses that the rocket science. I asked it before and still no one seems to be interested in discussing exactly what we achieved by that mission and what we expect to get next.

Accept it -Fashion plays more role in our daily lives. U_U

Anything new we can discover about our universe will have a direct or indirect influence on our daily lives.
This man should be supported so he gets encouraged to make new achievements and discoveries for us.

Lol I didn't see that coming the way everyone was talking about her. Also I read now that he called the "Rosetta" landing the sexiest mission ever. So screw it I give up, he wore the shirt for the sexy girl. Shitstorm well deserved.

Fashion is fun easy to understand and everyone gets to have their opinion about it so of course it is appealing :p

The mission was important though. Landing on a comet is a lot lot more difficult than it sounds. It needs very delicate calculations and even then it might fail. Also, "Rosetta" is going to stay on the comet and travel with it, something that was never done before. This way we get to see how exactly a comet functions during its journey, which is info we previosuly couldn't aqcuire through just observation.

I suspected as much because of your wording. :p She said she was happy that her husband's friend chose to wear it on such a occasion and although she is not a professional seamstress her husband is encouraging her to start and she is ready to take orders. So if you want a shirt for a presentation in a conference or the likes you can order your own piece. U_U XD

Yea I have been reading some news about the mission. Philae the lander itself went dead for now unless it can charge it's batteries when the comet gets closer to sun.

Why does the actions of a group of women bother you?
Why do you have opinions about something that you couldn't possibly experience?

I don't care about his shirt personally nor for those **** walkers( although you seem to totally missed their point- the **** walker are against objectification and about a declaration that wearing a certain type of clothes doesn't amount to consent). But one needs to know when it's a formal occasion and when they are attending a club. If in doubt- go conventional.

My point regards that was the type of clothing he was wearing though is a mark of his silly dress-sense but no where means he is a women hating monster he is being treated like.

If people are going to react this much to every dumb article or wear dumb clothes they have only themselves to blame. That shirt is ugly and not fit be worn to a work place in a scientific organization and to be paraded on such an occasion in a setting where it's bound to get attention.

As I said Ira scientists are not people who are not known for their social or fashion sense. Yes it was inappropriate for an interview or such but blunders happen. If it was just 'getting attention' it wld have been ok ....

Now the scientist indeed decided to make a fashion statement - too bad that he got the attention but differently than he intended. Some one posted an article making fun of it and it goes viral. Shouldn't you be able to chose to focus on what seems important to you and ignore irrelevant squabble?

Also I see you are not yet informed of the real situation .... He was not made fun of, it would have been more acceptable. What happened: He (his shirt) was basically presented as the lead cause and representative for of misogyny that prevents women from entering the STEM fields and makes the workplace oppressive towards them (That is where the artist being female comes about). THEN he was bullied over the net and all until he made a public apology over national TV all crying and shaking (That is what is horrendous imo) ..... If you think that is appropriate and not something wrong Ira then I am disappointed.

People reacting to that article complaining about the shirt are also wasting their time in the same way as those feminists. Why don't you chose which issue is paying attention to and which one is not? Let's accept it, the only reason the feminist article was able to achieve more hits because people seem to love locking heads in a war of sexes more than any science project. People are more concerned about fashion and what the other one is wearing than any mars landing. Make a thread about the scientific achievement and see how many passionate posts we get similar to this thread.

Well many of those thread/post ARE drawing attention to the achievement a thing even the media is not focusing on ..... A thread can have dual purpose.

It's simply over reaction by both sides. It's not like I see anyone in this thread or any other discussing what a mile stone the mars landing was or how and what humanity hopes to achieve from it. If the said feminists made it all about them you are contributing to it.

Comet landing ..... not mars ..... I can very well see the need of discussing that, but being a a layman in this field I would trust on the wider source to provide clues but you know what they are too busy with appeasing the 'feminists' .... Gathering news is really hard when that happens. (Though I can easily gather that the technology involved definitely has precision remote control, very good adhesion techniques, would be great for dynamic decisions but not so great energy reserves which is kinda expected).

If Archimedes ran naked across a town today, people would have already uploaded his image and made meme out of it.

If that was the end of it ...... as I said, u might like to look into the thing closely.

But Femme, they just did to a man what they don't want to be done to them. So where does that put their argument?

Because the guy is responsible for landing a spacecraft on a comet, but him wearing that shirt is getting more news than what he did because of feminazis. Also, feminazis go around saying that men shouldn't judge them for what they wear, but they flame a guy for what he wears.
