I'm guessing it may be something along the lines of isshin is giving his shinigami powers to Ichigo, or for the past year Isshin has been working with Urahara on a way to let Ichigo gain his powers back

It could be an invention of Urahara. It transfers powers. Remember the first time Ichigo took Rukia's power she was drained for a few months. Its the same thing without that side effect.
