How's it going? It's been a slow week.
I just wanted to make this thread today to show some interesting similarities I found between Naruto and some mythology.
So before I start, I decided to look into Limbo after reading this user's .

So here is something I was thinking about regarding Limbo.
In Shinto Mythology, one of the sacred locations is Ashihara no Nakatsukuni.
  • Ashihara no Nakatsukuni is described as being the center of reality:
  • Meaning it is the world between Heaven (Takamagahara) and Hell (Yomi).
Knowing this term's meaning, does anything ring a bell to you?
It certainly did for me when I reread Madara and Obito's conversation.

"Between this world and the next young Uchiha"
Obviously Madara was not being literal, but it still got me thinking that:
Limbo is Ashihara no Nakatsukuni.

So regarding this place's origin and explanation:
  • We know that in Japanese Mythology Izanagi and Izanami were the gods who shaped the world using the Sacred Amenonuboko (Naginata Spear)

  • But they also created Ame-no-ukihashi ("floating bridge of heaven"):
  • Ame-no-ukihashii is the bridge heaven, earth, and hell.

So Limbo/Ashihara no Nakatsukuni would be the space between each location (Space between heaven & earth, etc.)

So how does this relate to the Narutoverse?
Rikudo Sennin also shaped the world using the Nunuboku sword.

It would make sense that the after effect from this helped result in the appearance of "Limbo."
And it would make sense that Madara knew about the world as well since he has intense Rinnegan knowledge and knows the Rikudo's jutsus. (bottom right)

Brief Summary:
  • Limbo is Ashihara no Nakatsuni, a sacred location from mythology
  • The Limbo world exists between Heaven, Earth, and Hell
  • It came to be after Hagoromo shaped the world using the Nunoboku sword
  • Madara knew of the world from his extensive knowledge of Rinnegan and Rikudo's Jutsu
Thanks for reading, Vega

I like the theory. So then where did Limbo Madara manifest? Is this some form of advance Kage Bushin? Or is it something like black zetsu, something Madara willed into being using his rikudo power? Could this be a possible hint that Madara is capable of performing the Creation of All Things Jutsu?

Interesting indeed. Good job man.

Very interesting theory. If the Limbo dimension/world was a result of Hagoromo's use of the sword of Nunoboku, that would explain why you need the power of the Six Paths, Rikudo Senjutsu or Rinnegan to be able to perceive anything in that dimension.

Great theory Vega! :)

not a bad theory but Madara wasnt right about everything he stated. in the last scan posted he was wrong. he said you cant obtain the rinnegan unless you having both senju and uchiha DNA but we have found out that that is not correct madara was wrong you have to have both the Asuras and induras chakra or the sages chakra to awaken rinnegan. As madara was also confused as to how saskue awakend the rinnegan and stated they must have somthing else in common. So madara did know alot but he has not been completly right on everything he has said.

I agree with your summary, but I'm not sure that's where Obito and Madara's conversation took place. It hasn't been shown that anything else can simultaneously exist in Limbo besides Madara and his shadow self.

Interesting. Madara's dialogue is quite revolved around life and death. Wouldn't be surprised about this honestly. It is a good read.

I didn't literally mean that Madara took Obito there, just was using it as a connector for my other points.

Nice catch! Knowing Kishi and how he likes to put mythology into his works this theory definitly seems highly plausible. It also explains how Sasuke's rinnegan can see the limbo world, now only if there was a theory on the origins of the kamui world....

Thanks! I believe Sir Derp Obito made a thread on it and how it reflects graveyards, though I can't remember off the top of my head lol.
EDIT: Here's his thread:
