I think there is an ulterior motive for Madara wanting to fight Hashirama to the death, and the reason is for the initiation of the Eye of the Moon Plan.
Take a look at this:
From this we can infer that Madara himself had read the Uchiha Tablet with his EMS, but, he read it prior to his fight against Hashirama because Madara already went into hiding after losing the battle with the First Hokage.
It's only logical for Madara to have read the secrets of Rikudou Sennin and the Juubi with his EMS prior from his defection to Konoha and his fight against Hashirama:
a. Madara already went into hiding after losing in the Valley of the End.
b. Hashirama, Tobirama and the succeeding Hokages along with the Shinobis of the Leaf were guarding Konoha
c. The Uchihas had forsaken Madara (like when he tried to incite revolt) and would not aid him.
d. He awakened the Rinnegan when he was nearing his death and was stuck in the cave.
So it's logically impossible for Madara to have read the Uchiha Tablet after fighting with Hashirama, because Madara would no longer have the opportunity of reading the tablet after that point.
Now, since we have established that Madara had already read the Uchiha Tablet prior to his titanic battle with Hashirama, then it's only logical to assume that Madara already knew the secrets of Rikudou Sennin and the Juubi at that point.
Since Madara had read the tablet and acquired the more than enough history and knowledge concerning Rikudou Sennin and the Juubi to initiate his plans, he then knows that in order to successfully revive Juubi he would need Senju DNA (and possibly Mokuton) he knows that the combination of the Senju and Uchiha DNA would result in the awakening of the Rinnegan
And we know that the Rinnegan is needed to release the "shell" of Juubi from its' prison:
The Moon
So he needed Senju DNA, but since Madara is the most powerful Uchiha and is the embodiment of his ancestor (The Elder Son)
Then he would need to choose a Senju who is the embodiment of the Younger Son:
And that would be the most powerful Senju in Madara's era: Hashirama
Through the combination of Madara's and Hashirama's DNA: The optimal genetic probability of awakening the Rinnegan is achieved.
[I say optimal probability because, in principle, the mechanism of awakening the Rinnegan is possible with the combination of any Senju and Uchiha DNA, but with much lower chances of success]
So Madara needed Hashirama's DNA, and a substantial amount of it is what he needs [Just like in Edo Tensei, a substantial amount of the DNA is deceased, or else the Edo summoning would end in failure, as stated by Kabuto] So he needed to injure or bruise Hashirama enough to acquire an adequate sample of his DNA or blood, but a problem arises:
Hashirama Senju has great regenerative capabilities he could not be injured or harmed so easily, so Madara needed a very powerful weapon
So Madara defected and left Konoha
And he obtained this:
The most powerful Bijuu: Kurama
Now Madara has the firepower to bruise or injure Hashirama to obtain more than enough DNA sample from him, he challenges Hashirama under the guise of usurping his seat of Hokage and achieving full supremacy over the Leaf:
It was a fight to the death: both combatants were pushed to their limits:
Ultimately in the end Hashirama won:
But Madara survived he had acquired a suitable amount of Hashirama's DNA, more than enough to initiate his grand plan:

So he waited for years for the Rinnegan's awakening, the release of the Gedo Mazo, his machinations on Nagato, and his siring of his protege' Obito:
So Madara lost the battle in the Valley of the End, but deep inside him, he knew that the battle for the soul of the Shinobi World had just begun, and he, in the shadows, wait patiently for that time of reckoning.
