This is something that hit me while I was rereading part 1 of the manga, but I always wondered why they included it in between part 1 and part 2 (besides the obvious fact that Kishimoto is probably contractually bound to produce a certain number of manga volumes per time frame).
I know that there is some back story on Kakashi, but chapter 239 actually begins with Obito running through the forest. It also heavily focuses on Obito's character, as well as his Sharingan awakening.

I believe Kishimoto wanted us to see a younger Obito, in order to introduce who will eventually become one of the manga's biggest antagonists.

Not saying this is exactly what happened, but for it to be "Kakashi's Gaiden" they go quite a bit into Obito's earlier life.
This is just an idea/opinion based on my interpretation of manga chapters 239-244.

Please leave any comments/ideas/suggestions about my theory down below.

Ummm ... no sh*t ... :|

At the time we didn't realize the significance of Obito (obviously), so Kishi didn't call it "Obito Gaiden" -> though in retrospect that's basically what it was.

I still want my Minato Gaiden though. :)

Yes it obviously is Obito's story. Kishi made it just to introduce Obito as a hero

Yup, this was the entire point. Kakashi needing a backstory wasn't so pivotal, subtly introducing the main villain? Smart.

We saw Kakashi's part of the story, that's why it was called Kakashi's chronicles. We didn't see either Obito or Minato be alone for much time because they are characters veiled in somewhat mystery. A better name for that "chapter" would have been Team Minato chronicles but I guess it is still acceptable.

Obito's life was somehow emphasized more than Kakashi's. He was even the first to be introduced in the Gaiden. So yes, it actually was.

It's not really Obito gaiden because we did not see a major change in his character, but more in Kakashi. It was to reveal Kakashi's character and change, while merely introducing Obito.

Kakashi gaiden was made to reveal the backstory of team Minato.
We saw young Kakashi personality, the suicide of his father, some of his power and abilities. It was a story to reveal how Kakashi obtained the sharingan and how he developed his nindo.
Obito of course was introduced and we saw the important role he played in "turning" Kakashi.
Another important member,Rin, was there too.
I believe Kishi wanted to introduce the whole team because all three members in their way,played/playing a very important role to the whole series.
On the other hand, Kishi said before releasing that, that he would like to write another story with Kakashi as a protagonist.
So in this part I don't know if we can be sure that Kishi wanted to introduce Obito and Rin because he already had plans for them,or he just wrote that for Kakashi and then the story suited him and made Obito the main villain.

I never said it was solely Obito's story, and you are correct that we do get history on Kakashi, but Kakashi's nindo, and his sharingan
came from Obito. Rin's role was minimal in my opinion, and only really shows her face to heal Kakashi and transplant Obito's eye.

At the end we thought that it was Kakashi waking up, but it could have been Obito. Now that you pointed out that it seems like Kishi was trying to be subtle in his foreshadowing and it worked.

I mean their overall role...Obito's feeling for Rin is the reason he made the eye of the moon project and he "fell into darkness"
so her introduction was somehow important.
Of course Obito had a great part on the story, but I kinda of expected that back then.Kakashi referred to Obito from the first chapters and he always visited the monument with his name.We knew that from the begging and I always expected to learn more about Kakashi's "best friend".
So I am just saying that maybe Kishi didn't planed this from the beginning,he just made Obito's role big naturally, because he was the one who influenced one of the main characters of the series the most.
